US officials briefly issued a tsunami warning after a big earthquake off the northern California coast before saying the immediate danger had passed.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit at 7.50pm local time (1250 AEST today) 146km west of Crescent City, California, a rugged coastal community hit by a deadly tsunami in 1964.

Emergency officials initially issued a warning that a tsunami could hit anywhere from California up to Canada, but then lifted that warning.

The risk of a tsunami hitting at this point is gone," California Emergency Services spokesman Eric Lamoureux said.

Here's the USGS map based on first-hand reports from people describing what they felt. It's surprising how weakly this was felt given the magnitude.

I watch this seismograph in Utah that seems pretty sensitive to earthquakes all over the world. It shakes pretty much if there is a 6.0 or higher any place.

We are probably 400-600 miles from the center of this one, so it isn't suprising it loks so big.
