Oriana Fallaci is 75 years old. The renowned Italian journalist lives in hiding because of death threats she received after the publication in 2001 of her book The Rage and the Pride. She is dying of cancer. And now she is going to go on trial for “defaming Islam.”

How about the rest of the world who thinks Islam is made up of a bunch of thugs who are still stuck in the 7th century following the drugged out teachings of a murdering pedophile.

A perfect example what may happen when sensitivity is legislated. It becomes illegal to offend anyone, even those who seek to destroy a modern civilization and replace it with barbaric code of conduct.

I'm for freedom of speech, even if Muslims get ticked off. I've never heard of anyone getting prosecuted for "defaming" another religion. Religious beliefs are fine for those that believe them, but beliefs are not above criticism.

Certainly. I didn't hear that modern Christians were suing (let alone threatening to kill) Martin Scorcese for defamation after "The Last Temptation of Christ" or other attacks on those who criticize Christianity or Christians. Nobody heard of rampaging buddists after Taleban destroyed ancient Buddah statues in Afghanistan. Islam should not be given a special protected from criticism status.

Oriana Fallaci

Somehow I get her mixed up with Camille Paglia, the American art and literary critic who is also something of a maverick in liberal circles. I recently went to a Paglia book signing, and I'm glad I didn't praise her for "The Rage and the Pride." Would have been my "potatoe" moment.

Special protection, no. But I think that blasphemy is a serious offense and a civilized society should offer protection against it to all religious. Just because we hold to the barbaric notion that any public insult is "freedom of speech" doesn't mean the Muslim should.

"But I think that blasphemy is a serious offense and a civilized society should offer protection against it to all religious."

Then you have to define "blasphemy" in a way that all can agree on, and which does not prevent legitimate discourse about - and criticism of - religion. I wouldn't like to be the one assigned to write the anti-blasphemy laws.

You see, annalex, blasphemy is often ill-defined term. Is it a blasphemy to attack Islamic customs of terrible mistreatment of women in Islamic societies ?
Those who murdered Theo Van Gog thought so. Should we protect the murderers then because they murder in the name of Islam ? Is it a blasphemy to discuss the real life of the prophet Mohammed, including his child wife ?

When New York museum opened the anti-Catholic exhibit (featuring cross in Urine or images of Virgin Mary covered in Dung), I certainly agree it was amoral to allow this exhibit to run using public money. However, had this exhibit opened in some private gallery with private money, I would say that as much as I disapprove it, freedom means freedom (including for the views I strongly oppose).

The saying 'when in Rome' doesn't seem to apply to the new immigrants there, does it?

Apparently it no longer does. There are "protected minorities" who can do whatever they want simply because they are designated minorities.

Interesting. Most Muslims have no concept of freedom of speech, and if you even discuss Islam rationally, they threaten you with your life. It would be nice if they would keep it in the realm of "speech", instead of rioting and killing every time some mention of "desecration" is made.

The muslims are in for a world of hurt once she gets on the stand. I'll be looking forward to reading about it.

She says exactly what I think. If she has to go to jail, I have too. And I would go to jail proud of my self if the reason were I've defended my Home and my Country and my Culture.

Oriana is the best.

Yeah, and not only that, they'll put out a Fartwar on anyone who reads it.

Both are brilliant women but Paglia, by the way - unless she has changed - has always been an Edward Said Arabist-type.

I thought that Oriana Fallaci had become an American citizen and was not held to stupid European laws. I guess I was wrong again!
