School Changing Nickname, Mascot After Islamic Protest

HINESBURG, Vt. -- The Crusaders of Champlain Valley Union High are now history.
The School Board in the Vermont community is selecting a new nickname and mascot for the school.
The Islamic world has criticized the Crusades.
And closer to home, some people object to a knight bearing a crucifix as the symbol for a public school.
The image makeover will be implemented in time for the next school year.
Redhawks, Bobcats and Red Wolves are all in the running for Union High's new nickname.

Construction isn't the only change in the Champlain Valley Union High School gym. Next fall, after the sawdust clears, the teams that play here won't be called the Crusaders.
"I believe it came from a t-shirt that had a religious symbol on it. Some students thought that was offensive. We're a public school and we're trying to maintain separation of church and state," explains Alex Anderson of the CVU Mascot Committee.
So what name will be cheered from CVU's bleachers? The school board is considering three choices: the red hawks, the bobcats and the red wolves. One will replace the crusader.
The committee says the criteria were to be representative of CVU, to maintain the current colors of red and white, and to not be offensive. The committee surveyed students and presented its findings to the school board Thursday night.
But some people don't want a change at all.
"I've always known it to be the crusader, that really represents who we are as a school, nothing to do with what is historically -- we've made it into what we are," says CVU sophomore Senja Kling.
The mascot committee says it'll rally support for the new mascot -- whatever it is.
"We're going to come up with some new cheers, go to sports games, have a mascot, wave the flag, make a lot of noise and whatever we choose to be, we'll be supportive of it," says Anderson.
The school board will take comments from the public. It will make a decision at its next meeting on July 11th.

The school mascot can run around the field in a robe while swinging a bloody head in one hand, and a bloody knife in the other, while screaming the Muslim murder scream "ALLAHU AKBAR!!"
Why dont they call themselves the Cowards.
They can get a T-shirt showing people with their hands up.
Sounds like the high school I went to - team name was Bombers and mascot was a replica of A-bomb. Reason being, the town was a government town which helped build the A-Bomb. No one gave it a 2nd thought until PC came into being.

That symbolizes their willingness to roll over.
If the Mahommedans stayed home, in their desert, there would had no been any Crusades.
If the Islamists stayed home, in their own countries, the school would not have to change its nickname.
As long as the new name has the word "red" in it, everything should be fine.
