Prove your own ancestry
The Denver Post ^ | June 14, 2005 | Ernesto P. Alvarado

When the University of Colorado asked Ward Churchill to prove his Native-American ethnic identity, it raised the question of what makes a person one race or another.

After all, who is the "we" determining for others who they are? Can someone be Native-American and not be on any tribal roster? Can't individuals be of multiple groups?

In Churchill's case, a group of non-Native professors will decide if he is of a particular ethnic group. Will they begin their process with a self-evaluation of whichever criteria they devise? Should they be asked to first prove their whiteness? Can they?

Can someone decide for you what your ethnic background is and have it listed in a government-approved roster?

I've decided to be Warren Buffett.

Think they'll accept the $40,000,000,000 check at the bank?

From the article:

"In "The Lost Land," John C. Chavez estimated that 80 percent of Mexican people have Native-American blood. Since the majority of the Latino people in the United States come from Mexico, this suggests that 80 percent of those 40 million Latinos could be Native-Americans and are not on any tribal rolls."

Good grief...yet another convoluted reason to leave our borders wide open and pay for another country's citizens!

How can this possibly be of any importance?

MORON!!!!

I'm not claiming any rights, privileges or special insights based on my ancestry!!! If I said that because of my Irish or Huguenot or whatever heritage someone owed me a job at a public institution of higher learning, it might be incumbent on me to provide evidence of such heritage.

I think racial categories are absurd. Should we go back to the old southern words, quadroon, octaroon, mulatto. Does the "one drop" rule still hold. People have been cross breeding in America for 400 years. Lets just drop the whole thing and move on with something useful.

If Churchill can't ride bare back and lean under the horse to fire his rifle one-handed, he's not an American Indian. Case closed.

I've just started reading a book that says Sicily is QUITE the melting pot, given its location and history. Even German ancestry there.
If that's the case, and the U.S. is continuing to meld, can we assume that Americans will all look Sicilian in 100 years?

This Churchill thing is a bunch of hogwash. In my tribe when a person wants to sign up as a member, HE has to show the bloodline and ancestry to get on the rolls. The tribe doesn't find it for him. It is his own responsibility if he wants to be on the Reservation Roll. Churchill may be related to Custer but he sure is not an Indian.

American Indians, of tribes with whom the US concluded and ratified formal treaties, are sovereign nations /b>

Not in any meaningful sense. They are government granted little semi-sovereignity enclaves. It's a conceit, like most based on facts but wildly overstated by it's advocates. Do they mint money? Do they have an Army. Can they make their own laws (esp. those that contradict US laws). Are they recognized by other states?

who have affiliated themselves by formal, enforceable legal documents to the US Federal Government. They are individual sovereigns in union with Washington DC, like the States are.

And as we've just seen the sovereignity discussions re: medical marijuana the States are pretty much weakened shells of their former selves.

get a grip, Ernesto - DNA testing can establish genetic heritage easily, no political committee approval required Strongly disagree. Getting your DNA doesn't prove one way or another what "race" you are because there are not agreed on race markers or characteristics.

Whatever "Professor" Churchill turns out to be, he is also facing charges of academic plagiarism. Not exactly the crime of the century, but certainly very unacceptable for a university professor to engage in. If Churchill were not a faux professor, he'd either be an Enron accountant, a CBS or Newsweak journalist, or a three card monte dealer.

The prisons are full of natural born con men like Churchill. He just found easier and spineless marks in the academic community. Nonetheless, this academic charlatan must be terminated as a start in fixing a higher education system nearly destroyed in the 1960s by worthless baby boomers.

This article is stupid. The issue here is not what race Churchill is. That is difficult to judge. It is not, however, difficult to figure out if he is at all native american. And, the only reason why this is an issue is not that anyone cares, but that he used it is a criteria for why he should get a specifcic job.

As far as supplying false answers on a federal document, the feds would never want to open that can of worms. The repercussions of losing would create absolute havoc amongst all their Robin Hood schemes.

I cant see where the government can prove you are not black even if they visit you personally and find you to be white.

It could be argued that, if YOU believe that you are black, you are black! Let them prove otherwise..hell, the government does not even know what "is" is.

Because of the "Open Pollination" attitudes of my ancestors I'm a mutt with a work ethic. So the only only group I fall into is that of the endangered "American Tax Payer" (there's less and less of us all the time). So we get to pay for all of the socialistic, elitist, P.C. B.S..

"Open Pollination"

That's HILARIOUS. It reminds me of something the comedian Paul Rodriquez said in a stand-up act: "There are Hispanics as white as Cameron Diaz and as black as Sammy Sosa! That proves to me that Hispanics will sleep with anybody and everybody!"
