WASHINGTON Clark Gable enlisted at the age of 41 and took his cameraman into the Army with him as a fellow private.
Pfc. Steve McQueen served 30 days in the brig after going AWOL from the Marines. Pfc. Elvis Presley served a full hitch in the Army despite a fan's plea to first lady Mamie Eisenhower to have the king of rock 'n' roll released early. Lt. Henry Fonda earned a Bronze Star as a Navy combat pilot over the Pacific in World War II.
On Saturday, the National Archives for the first time opened the military records of 1.2 million men and women who served in the armed forces between 1885 and 1939 and the official files of 150 "persons of exceptional prominence" who served in the armed forces.
The records released by the National Archives show celebrities did their duty pretty much like everyone else - some with distinction, some without.
McQueen, for instance, portrayed a rebel in movies from "The Sand Pebbles" to "The Great Escape" to "The Reivers." He displayed a real-life rebellious streak while serving in the Marine Corps in 1949. He was apprehended by police in Raleigh, N.C., while wearing civilian clothes and absent without leave from his unit at Camp Lejeune, N.C. He admitted being a "straggler" and served 30 days in the brig.

YOu oughta enjoy this one!!
What was so unquestionably moronic and stupid about his little publicity stunt, (but yet the "suckers-born-every-minute" that paid money to see his film didn't question) was that he asked Republican Senators and Congressman if they would sign up their children.
Thats not how it works for vouluntary military service, but I guess no one mentioned that to idiot boy.
Very interesting! Does anyone know more about Lt. Henry Fonda's experience as a combat pilot? What did he fly, that sort of thing?
