All of the above, depending on the quake. It can also be a big sharp jolt or a series of them. The Northridge quake combined rapid back and forth movement as well as up and down along with the eeriest shrieking, groaning noises I've ever heard -- it was a wild ride and we were 30 or so miles from the epicenter. When I got up to try to turn on the bedroom light it felt like I was walking on a floor covered with gyrating basketballs.
...and "endangered" species...
Didn't feel a thing on Lookout Mountain in Georgia, of course. You guys stay safe out there.
Sitting in the lower level of a tri-level house here in Orange; I didn't feel it but heard a LOUD whoosh, like a big gust of wind, then sounded like someone was running down the stairs. Freaked my dogs out.
If something happens anywhere, it will be on FR within minutes.
It's not Bakersfield's fault.
the one i enjoyed the most was the norwalk in 1987, altho there were bigger ones, such as the 8.1 lander.
i was waiting for a our company van to pick me up in torrance. i was reading the l.a. times and eating a bagel and cream cheese outside.
i heard the birds take off. i felt the ground move, and decided to get away from the exterior of the building, in case something from the roof fell.
i walked across the parking lot and my knees kept buckling. the asphalt was wavy. i thought at the time "i'm walking on water"!
immmediately afterwards the dogs and car alarms went off.
my boss arrived and didn't know anything about it; an auto's suspension does its job.
there were a couple of aftershocks that night, i remember. it awakened me.on the 2nd floor of my apartment you could feel and hear the wooden frame give and take. it was like being on an old freight train.
I noticed just before it hit, you heard rumbling noise like a HUGE train going through the area. Then the dogs started howling, barking...

That's why someone compared FReepers to the coast watchers in WW2. Well deserved comparison IMO.
What, I felt it very good, as good as I felt the northridge...I am right near the 605, 405, 22 junction, ...

FNC is reporting that the quake was 8 miles deep
We felt some fun rolling & sliding up here in the high desert.
What was interesting is that the cats were acting really freaky this morning. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<,p>
I didn't notice much different with my big cats, but the 2 kittens I'm caring for were hissing for no reason, they usually only do it if the dogs are near. I couldn't figure out what was scaring them, then heard about the quake. The hissing was going on before the quake, and they haven't done it since.
Now that is wierd!
