Illegal workers are renting legitimately obtained Social Security numbers from people who have returned to Mexico or others in the United States.
The situation is further testament to our quarter-hearted immigration policies and the redoubtable capacity of cagey people to milk every drop out of the welfare state. (A welfare state's whole point is giving something for nothing; hence its philosophical foundation induces waste, inefficiency and fraud.)

They also use social security numbers of dead seniors who no longer need them.
Quite a science isn't it? Wonder what else they've got figured out?
This is why our imperial federal government won't do anything about the illegal immigration problem. They LOVE the windfall of employment tax payments remitted to the the US treasury against obviously fraudulent social security numbers. You think they want to give that up? No way.
So if they make less than "x" amount of dollars per year they would also qualify for earned income credit where they would get even more tax dollars back than paid in, just another lousy use of my tax dollars.
So many people around nowadays who would sell their soul for a dollar. Employers of illegals are one group. For the love of money is the root of evil.
Well what else they've figured out is that anyone from anyother country can get a SS number, simply by taking their work record from their home country to their embassy. They can then apply for social security and receive full benefits.
ALL legal. I know of an Iranian family and their 'parents' that did just that. Went to the embassy filed and social security benefits waiting for them when they came to live with their son, here.
There is where SS is going. It is being given to people who have not put a penny into the system. They come here to live with their families here.
They are basically receiving our social security benefits, and the he!! with Americans.

(This was aired during the week of 5 June.)
LOU DOBBS, CNN ANCHOR: Good evening, everybody. Tonight, an astonishing proposal to expand our borders to incorporate Mexico and Canada and simultaneously further diminish U.S. sovereignty. Have our political elites gone mad? We'll have a special report. blood.DOBBS: Border security is arguably the critical issue in this country's fight against radical Islamist terrorism. But our borders remain porous. So porous that three million illegal aliens entered this country last year, nearly all of them from Mexico.
Now, incredibly, a panel sponsored by the Council on Foreign Relations wants the United States to focus not on the defense of our own borders, but rather create what effectively would be a common border that includes Mexico and Canada.
Christine Romans has the report.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
CHRISTINE ROMANS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): On Capitol Hill, testimonycalling for Americans to start thinking like citizens of North America and treat the U.S., Mexico and Canada like one big country. ROBERT PASTOR, IND. TASK FORCE ON NORTH AMERICA: The best way to secure the United States today is not at our two borders with Mexico and Canada, but at the borders of North America as a whole.
ROMANS: That's the view in a report called "Building a North American Community." It envisions a common border around the U.S., Mexico and Canada in just five years, a border pass for residents of the three countries, and a freer flow of goods and people.
Task force member Robert Pastor.
PASTOR: What we hope to accomplish by 2010 is a common external tariff which will mean that goods can move easily across the border. We want a common security perimeter around all of North America, so as to ease the travel of people within North America.
ROMANS: Buried in 49 pages of recommendations from the task force, the brief mention, "We must maintain respect for each other's sovereignty." But security experts say folding Mexico and Canada into the U.S. is a grave breach of that sovereignty.
FRANK GAFFNEY, CENTER FOR SECURITY POLICY: That's what would happen if anybody serious were to embrace this strategy for homogenizing the United States and its sovereignty with the very different systems existing today in Canada and Mexico.
ROMANS: Especially considering Mexico's problems with drug trafficking, human smuggling and poverty. Critics say the country is just too far behind the U.S. and Canada to be included in a so-called common community. But the task force wants military and law enforcement cooperation between all three countries.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Indeed, an exchange of personnel that bring Canadians and Mexicans into the Department of Homeland Security.
ROMANS: And it wants temporary migrant worker programs expanded with full mobility of labor between the three countries in the next five years.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
ROMANS: The idea here is to make North America more like the European Union. Yet, just this week, voters in two major countries in the European Union voted against upgrading -- updating the European constitution. So clearly, this is not the best week to be trying to sell that idea.
DOBBS: Americans must think that our political and academic elites have gone utterly mad at a time when three-and-a-half years, approaching four years after September 11, we still don't have border security. And this group of elites is talking about not defending our borders, finally, but rather creating new ones. It's astonishing.
ROMANS: The theory here is that we are stronger together, three countries in one, rather than alone.
DOBBS: Well, it's a -- it's a mind-boggling concept. Christine Romans, thank you, as always. ####
From what I understand, you do not have to be in this country legally in order to apply for a SS number. The SS dept turns a blind eye towards this. Illegals can get a legit SS number now.
Social Security numbers are for sale on the streets in Miami - you can also buy a Fl. drivers license.
Just as foreigners can apply for social security and get FULL benefits.
That is why when everyone born after 1950 comes of age to collect, it won't be there. Too many undeserving people are receiving NOW.
Our SS system definately needs fixed. Something stay at home mom's need to consider, I was married 24 years, stayed at home about 5 years till the kids went to school. Now, when I get that SS statement, those years have zero income bringing my SS down due to averaging my income.
I realize most women who are stay at home mom's never consider divorce but it does happen, if they've raised their children it could be 18 years with no income, hence no SS.
"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government,
1. The act of invading; the act of encroaching upon the rights or possessions of another; encroachment; trespass.
More to the point, these people are traitors to the United States. Americans who won't back putting a stop to illegal immigration will someday rue the day George Bush was elected President. I believe had the dopey Democrat algor been elected, the Pubs would have fought tooth and nail to keep immigration on the front burner. However, with Karl Rove (the country's main enemy) looking over every Republican's shoulder in Congress, they are not going to go against Bush's one world order and his outright destruction of the United States.
I am in that predicament. Married two kids retraining for a new career, and 19 years with only pt work. I am so screwed, cause the government only cares about immigrants.
That's not entirely true. Where I work sometimes we get notice that a new hire's SS number is invalid, or from someone retired, or in double use. They ask the HR to check the accuracy of the data, etc. They do watch it, but not very closely. Usually if you send them a new number it works out.
I don't think I'd want a national ID system that wasn't rife with fraud. I don't want to live in a nation with "your papers please" and the more inaccurate the ID #'s the harder it is to get to that point.
I say scrap SS and scrap SS #'s.
