Thanks for saving me the trouble of that google page. An exact search returns about 23,400 hits. I shun google as much as the next conservative, but you gotta give the devil his due.

I use Mozilla

I was using Mozilla when I was on dialup, and I'm going to install it on this machine. Thanks for the tip.

Google basically shows that it is not independent. They could easily perform the same action with bloggers or any of the none-believers of global warming. Might as well drop it totally if you can't depend on the validity of the search.

You need to scan your computer! adaware and spybot are a good start, but look around- there may be newer products out there.

Also, martin_fierro has a list of free utilities, including a virus scanner that I've been using successfully for months now. Ask him.

I have Ad-Aware, which is the best I've found that works as well as it does for free. I scan for adware and tracking cookies every time after I've been on line. Word of advice: Microsoft has a free adware scanner - in beta stage - that looks impressive, but as you might expect, it doesn't find any adware. I finally got suspicious of its reporting that everything was "all clear" and reinstalled Ad-Aware.

I downloaded (free) a "smart" popup blocker that seems to work pretty well; it beeps whenever a popup tries to ... well, pop up. Very few get through anymore, and it hasn't blocked any desired screens.

For viruses and other anomalies, I use Norton SystemWorks, which has really done the job well so far, keeping the whole machine scanned for all kinds of problems and fixing them.
