CBS PETITIONED TO PROBE SHOWTIME
Catholic League president William Donohue explained today the leagues strategy for dealing with Showtime, the cable network that recently aired a hate-filled episode of Penn and Teller:
On May 23, 24 and 27, Showtimes Penn and Teller aired the Holier Than Thou episode that has so enraged Catholics, as well as people of all faiths (click here). The obscene assault on Mother Teresa, her Missionaries of Charity and the Catholic Church was arguably the most vicious anti-Catholic fare ever shown on television in the United States. An excerpt of this show was sent to 350 persons of influence, including every bishop who commands a diocese. Now we want results.
Beginning today, we are launching a nation-wide campaign demanding that CBS initiate a probe into this matter. Why CBS? Showtime is owned by Viacom, and Viacom has many subsidiaries in the entertainment and communications industries, none of which is more prominent than CBS. Now it may be that those who work at CBS had nothing to do with the offending Showtime episode. Nonetheless, CBS bears corporate responsibility. Just as important, the famous CBS name has been sullied by what Showtime did.
We are focusing our attention on two persons: Leslie Moonves, Chairman and CEO of CBS, and Nancy Tellem, President, CBS Paramount Network (Showtime is a Paramount TV studio that will remain with CBS even if Viacom splits into two entities this summer). The petition (click here) seeks justice: We want those responsible for this bigoted assault on Catholicism to be held accountable for the damage they have done.
In addition to pushing this petition on our website, we will ask our members to get involved: the July-August edition of Catalyst, our monthly journal, will reprint the petition. We are most proud of the support that we have received from those outside the Catholic community. They know whats at stake and they look to CBS to correct it.
Barry Wom was cool.
How am I Michael Moore? I like the Penn & Teller show, its pretty funny, and they often rip the hell out of liberals.
Watch the College show they did.
When SG-1 moved to Sci-Fi, I realized that the only things I was watching on the premium channels was SG-1 and football stuff.
Let us not forget that Nickelodian (another Viacom owned property) recently indoctirnated kids with the belief that the Texas war for Indiependence was caused by proslavery forces.
All I watched on Showtime (when we had it) was SG-1 and BS. Now I just love my Friday SciFi channel (SG-1, Atlantis, and the great Battlestar Galactica).
We have the first 2 season of P&T on DVD. I don't agree with everything they say but I still enjoy the show.
Same way the Mormons do it: wait till they're dead, then baptize 'em.
Now that's funny, equating Princess Di's funeral to Mother Teresa's.:) Di's funeral was a world wide extravaganza with Elton John even recycling an old song of his. Mother Teresa's funeral received very little publicity comparatively. She was mourned mostly by Calcuttans, but surely you knew that.
You obviously want to believe the unproven slanders about Mother Teresa, and that is that. The rest is all semantics, just words, and no proof. If's that what you want, then no logic will change you. It's intellectually dishonest, but it's your choice.
Catholics don't convert people like that.
They went after Creationists and The Bible. Those two alone defeat your hypothesis.

How typically deceptive. You conveniently left out the first part of Antoninus's post #113 which would have changed the meaning, but you knew that and that's why you left it out. From #113:
"When they have the cojones to put Islam under the microscope, I might agree with you. Until then, I think they're cowards going after the weak, the dead, and those who can't really hurt them physically or economially."
Secularists just gotta hate someone who makes a speech like this, I guess? Jesus said if they hate Me, they will hate you. He's right as always.
Frank
The best thing to do is to sugget every Catholic cancel Showtime. That'll really hurt

Here is what Donohue is offended at.
That's exactly what's being happening for a while. Just ask Dan Rather & Mary Mapes or Newsweek, for instance, why their lies didn't work like they used to because it's now the info age.
Yes, amen! The Second Coming of CBS, the Rt. Rev. Dan Rather, got busted.:)
Thanks for the link.

No specifics given. Just that it was a "hit piece."
> How typically deceptive.
???
> You conveniently left out the first part of Antoninus's post #113 which would have changed the meaning
It does not change the meaning. No more than the "well regulated militia" part of the 2nd Amendment changes the meaning of "shall not be infringed." Antoninus claimed that P&T haven't gone after the weak and those who can hurt them economically. i pointed out that they've gone after Creationists and The Bible. That means "Christians." Are you somehow unaware of the economic power of Christians in the US?
Here are the topics they've covered so far:
Season 3:
Circumcision
Family Values
Conspiracy Theories
Life Coaching
Holier Than Thou
College
Big Brother
Season 2:
P.E.T.A.
Safety Hysteria
The Business of Love
War on Drugs
Recycling
The Bible
Yoga, Tantric Sex, Etc.
Fountain of Youth
Death, Inc.
Profanity
12-Stepping

End Of The World
Baby Bullsh!t

Ouija Boards
Near Death Experiences
Environmental Hysteria
Now, when you see "PETA" and "Environmental Hysteria," do you think, "Naw, ain't no nutjobs in THOSE categories..."?
Here's what's been recent, and what's coming:
29. Conspiracy Theories
Explores the growing belief in conspiracy theories, which stems from the lack of trust in government leaders. Also the ease of the internet to instantly spread those theories around the world.
b: 09-May-2005 pc: 303
30. Life Coaching
Are new-age therapists just spouting psychobabble? Penn & Teller take on people who call themselves "Life Coaches". Are they really helping people or just offering their services for over inflated prices.
b: 16-May-2005 pc: 304
31. Holier Than Thou
The guys take on Mother Teresa, Gandhi and the Dalai Lama to reveal the truth about the so-called enlightened spiritual leaders.
b: 23-May-2005 pc: 305
32. College
gs: Noam Chomsky (Himself)
A look at college education, viewed by many as a must for those looking for success. In reality a $400 billion-per-year industry driven by fear and more interested in espousing leftist dogma than in learning.
b: 30-May-2005 pc: 306
33. Big Brother
b: 13-Jun-2005 pc: 307
34. Hair

37. Ghost Buster
b: 11-Jul-2005 pc: 311
38. Endangered Species
b: 18-Jul-2005 pc: 312
Just makes me wish all the more that I had Showtime, and didn't have to wait for the DVDs (which are availoable on Amazon, by the way). Yeah, tackling leftist dogma on college and gun control... that's *really* horribly anti-conservative...
I happen to enjoy Penn and Teller myself. Their show on Peta was hysterical!
I never actually claimed you meant the IRA aren't terrorists. And I understand that they aren't trying to further the cause of the Catholic Church, but the fact is they use do you religion to further their own cause. They've used Churches (with the priests' consent) to hide their arsenals and stage bombings - Claudy is just one example. The Protestants do the same thing.
The paramilitaries and regular thugs on the street target people because of their religion. That's why you see signs all around Belfast, in the paramilitary strongholds, "Taigs/Huns enter at your own risk." Taig/Hun being deragatory for Catholic/Protestant. The Shankill Butchers (Protestant terrorists) in the 70s drove the streets of Belfast looking for Catholics to torture and kill. The IRA today threatens Catholics who join the police service. They don't threaten nationalists, they specifically use the term Catholics.
Just because priests aren't publically supporting the IRA in the newspapers doesn't mean they weren't doing it behind the walls of their churches. Several prominent authors have written about the role Catholicism plays in the IRA. From the IRA induction ceremonies that are based on Catholic traditions, to the Christian Brothers openenly teaching the virtures of IRA republicans to its students for decades. There's a reason most of the founders of the current IRA organization - the Provos - were all Christian Brothers students.
Interestingly, the Provos have a new punishment shooting style, because Royal Victoria hospital has gotten so good at rebuilding knees. They make their victims kneel and clasp their hands together like they are praying. Then the victims are shot point blank through both hands. They call it - wait for it...the Padre Pio.
So, I applaud the Bishop who finally called on the IRA to disarm. It was long overdue. The Catholic Church in Ireland remained silent for too many years. But to say there are no such thing as Catholic terrorists is absurd. And to say there is no such thing as Protestant terrorists is equally absurd.
If had the millions and millions of dollars that Mother Theresa did, I could. She didn't. Most of it went to the church with no real investment back to better facilities and medical care. This is all well documented, BTW.
I won't even get into the spiritual benefits they offered as that obviously means nothing to you--To a Catholic, it means everything. More than all the ice chips and pain-killers in the world.
First, you assume a lot, and when did catholics get the monopoly on Christian care of fellow human beings. For the millions the Church took in on this venture, I think ice chips and pain killers could have been provided.
It is now no secert that Mother Theresa's Organization did less for the people they were caring for than they could have. I find it rather shameful that an organization like the church would take all those millions and not provide better care. Spiritual benefits or not, this does not negate the ugliness of that fact.
