Thurmont police Sgt. Shawn Tyler said he could barely believe his eyes: Before him, at a Frederick County shopping mall, a woman was helping three young children into the trunk of her car.
Two boys -- one the woman's 9-year-old son and the other an 8-year-old friend -- hopped into the trunk of the teal Volvo 850 on their own, according to court documents charging Lanora Adele Lucas with three counts of reckless endangerment. The 3-year-old, Lucas's daughter, came last, set inside by Lucas, the officer said. With that, she drove off southward.
...
"Yes, you did," Tyler replied.
"I don't think so," Lucas said.
"What about the three children you have in the trunk of your car?" Tyler asked.
As soon as Tyler spoke, Lucas "began to visibly shake," Tyler said in an interview yesterday. "She knew she was in trouble."
Tyler said he ordered Lucas to open the trunk. Inside were three children Tyler described as looking "terrified." The 3-year-old was soaked with sweat, wearing nothing but a diaper.

?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?
It's more than stupidity. It's cruelty and abuse.
Gee, and they didn't even need their night vision equipment to find the kids in the trunk.
This is not "stupidity" - it's attempted homicide. How many times have we heard this story where the children were found dead, in twos or even threes, locked in the trunk of a car? These deaths come thick and fast during the summer - ONLY during the summer - and the kids parents and relatives are never really questioned about it - in spite of the fact it is really HARD to lock oneself up in the trunk of most cars. (Try it sometime and see - but only if you have someone to help you out just in case you succeed :P) But the immediate response of LE is almost always "oh, look, the children did it on their own"...
I don't buy it for a minute. Get those children out of there NOW.
Because of the danger of airbags and side impact crashes, the trunk is probably the safest place for children.
Hey! What have you got against.........no wait...I can see your point....
The kids we read about are almost all belted into child seats. Those go in the back seat, not the trunk.
This is the first kids-in-a-trunk story I've ever read.

Isn't that in close proximity of the gas tank?
Unfortunately, there is no "perfectly" safe place in a car.
I agree...
It got really bad a couple of years back. Children were being found dead all over the country when they "accidentally locked themselves in the trunks of cars". This year, it seems to be coming back...

GALLUP, NM Relatives drove around their neighborhood for up to an hour searching for four young cousins before discovering they were locked in the trunk of the car, suffocating and dying from the heat.

No more room in your car? Put the kids in the trunk

I've always thought that while a few of them may have been accidental, the majority of them were deliberately put in the trunk of the car. Call me cynical, but I believe this was definitely abuse, and possibly an attempt to have the children meet an "accidental" death...
Just stop!
