Bush Open to Possibly Closing Gitmo Camp (When hell freezes over)

WASHINGTON -- President Bush on Wednesday left open the possibility that the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, could be shut down following mounting criticism from former President Carter and others.

"We're exploring all alternatives as to how best to do the main objective, which is to protect America," Bush said when asked in an interview with Fox News Channel's Neil Cavuto if he would close the detention center.

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, however, said he did not know of anyone in the administration who was considering closing Guantanamo. He defended the military's operation of the camp.

Others just use the opportunity to rail about the only issue that raises their dander, in this case, illegal immigration.

Yep, they try to hijack every thread they can and go after members who don't agree with them and support the President. I even have a stalker that keeps trying to bait me into getting banned.

Good discussion last night at the Bar Association on the role of the judiciary in the War on Terror. There were some excellent arguments made that SCOTUS has an extremely minimal role in judging the rights of noncitizens. Many instances were pointed out of previous wartime deferrals to the president. Of course the last country we officially declared war on was Romania.

The lefties were represented as well, whining that they have not been allowed to visit their Gitmo clients and accusing the more conservative panelists of religious prejudice.

I hope someone from the administration was there, or that they will get their hands on the video.

I won't try to summarize, especially since not being a lawyer, I missed a few things, but I got the gist of it.

The discussion got very heated at one point but thanks to the competent moderation of Mary Jo White it was soon back on track and ended on a light note when someone said let's wrap it up with a kumbaya moment and all agree that Congress should take some action. Barrington Parker: "That's a stupid idea."

They could always close it and transfer the scum to either Diego Garcia or better yet one of the remote Aleutian Islands where they could reconstruct the open cells and turn the detainees into dirtsicles.

The Muslim world would be rejoicing and view it as a victory in the WOT.

This was brought up too last evening. It definitely would fall under giving aid and comfort to the enemy, as would distorting the president's words in the press.

Blinked on the Terry Schiavo case. -The President did what was within his power. Had he done more it would have been no different than the Janet Reno/Elian raid which was widely condemned on FR.

Waffled on the Gitmo matter. -Really? Are you so naive that you believe the AP?

Scuttled Israel by realigning to the 1949 armistice. -Hmmm, since when does the President tell Israel what they must do? He can offer a position but cannot force them to take it.

Cozied up with V. Fox and refused to tighten US Border Controls. -Typical Buchanan/Tancredo talking point that lacks substance.

Floated the "trial balloon" of amnesty for Illegal Aliens. -Flat out lie but don't let the truth get in the way of you Bush hatred. (See #2)

Negotiated and promoted Bipartisanship with the demoncats. - Hate to tell you this but in until now, the Senate was so closely divided that the President had no choice but to negotiate if he wanted anything done.

Somehow I have a feeling that you probably never voted for the President in 2004 or even 2000. Probably voted Reform Party in 2000 and Constitution Party in 2004 or did you write in Tom "It's All About Me" Tancredo?

Excuse me, but what makes you think he wasn't careful?!

As adults, WE are responsible for intelligently processing/consuming the 'news'! If we allow ourselves to be duped by a biased media, it is we who are to blame NOT the President!

If Bush were REALLY considering this, wouldn't Rummy know about it??? C'mon, people.

FACT: The headline and premise of the article is a lie, and your little rant defending that lie is telling.

I wouldn't say that just yet. It's called politics, my friend.

If he would have responded: "Hell no, we may have to execute most of these unlawful terrorist combatants and I refused to be forced into accelerating our decision on these people until we have had the opportunity to give it due consideration." That would also have been called politics, and even leadership.

Ask yourself: Why did Bush choose to waffle on this issue on the day in which his opposition issued a direct and unambigous challenge to close the base?

Maybe so, but it's the people of this country that cast the votes and keep us in or out of power. Their perception is crucial to whether we win elections or not.

Bush should have just said...Gitmo ain't going nowhere. That way, AP could not have put words in his mouth.

Bush is looking weaker and weaker. I hope this is part of some grand strategy, but it doesn't look like it. It's hard to support a guy who fight for himself.
