New York,NY(AHN)-Bob Costas, one of televisions most accomplished broadcasters and host of HBOs Costas Now, joins CNN as a substitute host for Larry King Live, it was announced today by CNN/U.S. President Jon Klein.
Were thrilled to have one of televisions most outstanding broadcasters joining the CNN roster, Klein said. Bobs quick wit, nimble mind and broad range of interests will engage viewers in the best King tradition.
Its an honor to have the opportunity to sit in for Larry, Costas said. Ive always enjoyed the long-form interview, and Larrys program is synonymous with that television format.
Costas joined HBO Sports in February 2001 with the debut of On the Record with Bob Costas, a compelling mix of interviews, commentary and debate. As the shows host, he has won the Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Studio Host from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for four straight years.
Costass other work for HBO Sports includes co-hosting Inside the NFL, cables longest-running series, and hosting duties for pay-per-view boxing specials.
A 25-year veteran of NBC Sports, Costas has been a prominent figure in virtually every major sports event for the network, including six Olympics and numerous World Series, Super Bowls and NBA finals.
For six years, he hosted his own highly acclaimed late-night talk show, Later with Bob Costas. Besides garnering 17 Emmy awards, Costas has been honored as Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association a record eight times.

Like I said, I have listened to the man speak at length on his overnight talk show years ago...I recognize an entertainment industry Liberal when I see one. If he's intelligent enough to praise Bush and Reagan, more power to him...it still doesn't make him a moderate.
Bob Costas was one of the most well-prepared, well-informed interviewers around during the years he did "Later".
His all-time favorite interviewee according to him, was Rush Limbaugh. In fact, he enjoyed having Rush on so much, that he asked Rush to stay on to tape additional footage that was then broadcast for a second night. Years later, Costas still said Rush was his all-time favorite interviewee. Limbaugh left quite an impression on him.
He was the protege of Hall of Fame broadcaster Jack Buck, who was a Republican and whom Costas has said was a great influence on his life.
I would be surprised if he is a liberal. He has mostly kept his political opinions and preferences to himself to avoid the taint of having to deal with the criticism. It is refreshing.
"Later" was one of the best shows of its kind, and Costas was one of the best interviewers of this generation. It's not his fault the show jumped the shark with Greg Kinnear.
I would not, as I obviously believe that he is a liberal. (Allbeit a slightly enlightened one.) That said, he does not broadcast his political leanings to the world like so many others, and for that I do give him credit.
"I would not, as I obviously believe that he is a liberal."
I wonder if DU calls him a conservative.
We do know he is an outspoken traditionalist when it comes to baseball. We also know he is a devout Catholic. These things would suggest he has conservative leanings.
Another thing we know about him is he is very generous with his time and money when it comes to charities, particularly those involving children with cancer. The cancer wing of Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital is named in his honor because of his efforts toward having it built.
He can come across as twerpish, but I think he does a good job as a sportscaster and tries to keep out of politics.
Ain't that the truth? So full of himself......don't like him, never have.
Well, I'll say this, Costas is obviously not my cup of tea.
Your information, however, is correct and I do believe in giving credit where credit is due, especially with regard to his contributions to the fight against cancer.
Hasn't Costas worked for NBC for a long time? Why is he switching teams and going to CNN rather than MSNBC? Seems strange to me.
