Surfer May Have Been Bitten by Shark
SURF CITY, N.J. (AP) - A teenage surfer was bitten in an apparent shark attack off the New Jersey coast, and experts believe a small great white may be responsible.
It would be the first recorded shark attack in the state's waters in 30 years.
Ryan Horton, 17, said he never saw what bit him when he felt a stabbing pain in his ankle Sunday afternoon.
"I was swimming up and it just felt like somebody hit me in the foot with a baseball bat," Horton said. He paddled to shore, where his brother helped him to a hospital. Horton received more than 50 stitches on his lower leg.
Based on the tooth marks, the season and the location, the shark was likely either a small great white or a sandbar shark, said George Burgess, a Florida expert who is curator of the International Shark Attack File. He had examined an e-mailed photo of Horton's injury.
Two local experts said they think it was a great white shark.

Is it 1916 again? Surf City New Jersey is about 10 miles from Beach Haven where one of the famous 1916 shark attacks occured. - Tom

Although I had already sworn off all Jersey beachs except for Island Beach State Park, this will make me think twice even when going there.

Yes!, The shark's normal diet of fish has moved or died in retreat from the Red Tide which is a symptom of Globull Warming which is Bush's fault!....../s

I don't know what would freak me more. Having a great white bite me or having something unknown and unseen attack me.

Lake Michigan has no sharks (well, we've an overabundance of lawyers...). We are going to rebuild Michigan's economy based on surfing. I'm writing a new state song (Surfin' Mi-chi-gan...based on Surfin' USA). So, all you former Jersey surfers, c'mon over!

We had a rash of them down here a few years ago, Tidewater and Hatteras regions.
I wonder if they finally stopped chumming off the beaches where the locals swim? I kid you not.

"May" have been bitten by a shark? What are the other possibilities? I should think a shark bite would be obvious.

I'm writing a new state song... Have you heard "Goin' to Alpena" by the Urbations?
It may be kinda what you're thinking about here.
