LONDON (Reuters) - A cache of guns, bugging devices and equipment that may have been used for torture has been discovered at Iraq's abandoned embassy in Britain, the country's newly appointed ambassador said on Wednesday.

Scotland Yard confirmed "a number of firearms" had been recovered from the embassy in an upmarket area of southwest London but declined to say when.

Dr Salah Al Shaikhly told BBC radio the arms haul, which dates to Saddam Hussein's period in power, included four machine guns, several Uzis and 10 handguns with silencers and had been found in one of the 20-odd safes at the embassy.

"It was amazing, you really despair when you know this kind of arsenal was kept at the Iraqi embassy," Al Shaikhly said.

"There were also other things which looked like electric cattle prods," he added.

Ahhhhh they very well might. I've never seen the inside of an Arm's locker at an Embassy, but I can imagine it has all kinds of goodies.

Embassies are entitled to maintain reasonable security and protection. I would imagine even in London, the Marine guards at the US embassy have some serious gear at the ready. But silencers and cattle prods don't fit any protection category.

Yusuf Galan- who is directly charged by a Spanish court with being ' directly involved in the planning of 9-11" was invited to a party at the Iraqi embasssy in Madrid. The invitation used his ' al queda nom de guerre' the London's Independent reports.

If you are British, no offense intended. I meant it when I referred to the great British people. But even though the the terrorist threat is very real, among peace-loving people it's easier to retreat into a form of denial and political correctness rather than take the unpleasant but necessary steps to confront the threat.

Thanks for your concern, but we do have some experience of dealing with terrorism.

I wouldn't necesarily connect a collection of small arms in an embassy with terrorism in any case. As others have pointed out, it would be quite suprising if an embassy did not have some kind of cache.

Indeed. We have been fortunate in having little experience with true domestic terrorism and often at odds over how to confront it.

Yes. . .and we have some experience with terrorists as well. . .not counting 9-11 either.

Thing is, the Brit media is acting surprised that the Iraqi Embassy had weapons and such. . .like it never dawned on them the Iraqi Embassy--of all places--would be armed.

Electric cattle prods, however....

Darn right. Big trouble there. They could have PETA on them in a flash.

Actually, I was serious. I can see an embassy having weapons of the sort described. Cattle prods imply torture chambers, though, which no embassy should ever have.

Loose cow, loose sheep... either way I think they'd have used something other than a cattle prod.

MARCH 2003 : (SPAIN : REPORTS SURFACE THAT 911 CONSPIRATOR GALAN WAS INVITED TO PARTY BY IRAQI AMBASSADOR TO SPAIN) An alleged terrorist accused of helping the 11 September conspirators was invited to a party by the Iraqi ambassador to Spain under his al-Qaeda nom de guerre, according to documents seized by Spanish investigators. Yusuf Galan, who was photographed being trained at a camp run by Osama bin Laden, is now in jail, awaiting trial in Madrid.
The indictment against him, drawn up by investigating judge Baltasar Garzon, claims he was 'directly involved with the preparation and carrying out of the attacks ... by the suicide pilots on 11 September'.
Evidence of Galan's links with Iraqi government officials came to light only recently, as investigators pored through more than 40,000 pages of documents seized in raids at the homes of Galan and seven alleged co-conspirators. The Spanish authorities have supplied copies to lawyers in America, and this week the documents will form part of a dossier to be filed in a federal court in Washington, claiming damages of approximately $100 billion on behalf of more than 2,500 11 September victims.
The lawsuit lists Saddam's government in Iraq as one of its principal defendants, claiming it provided 'material support' to the al-Qaeda terrorists.
Under US law, the victims' families do not have to prove active direction or involvement in the details of the 9/11 conspiracy by Iraq, only that Saddam's regime gave al-Qaeda more general assistance in the knowledge that it was planning to attack American targets. The evidence in support of the 9/11 damages claim cites several examples of this alleged co-operation. They include the terrorist training camp at Salman Pak near Baghdad, where former Iraqi intelligence brigadier Jamal al-Qurairy has said that non-Iraqi Islamic radicals were trained to hijack aircraft using knives.

APRIL 14, 2003 Monday : (SPAIN EXPELS IRAQI DIPLOMATS AFTER FINDING WEAPONS STASH AT THE IRAQI EMBASSY IN MADRID)  Spain ordered seven Iraqi officials to leave the country by Wednesday after 21 guns and 800 rounds of ammunition were found at the Iraqi Embassy in Madrid, Spain's Foreign Ministry said Monday. Two other Iraqi diplomats -- including one who told Spain last week about the weapons cache -- will not be expelled, and the embassy will remain open, the Foreign Ministry said.
