Seems to me that folks who're that motivated, and that crafty, are the sorts of illegal immigrants we'd want to get in....

Why would people go to such lengths to leave the worker's paradise that is Cuba?

Make US citizenship a points system for the Cubans based on creativity. This rates some series style points so they get in. Make a raft out of old tires...no points and we send you back.

After the floating vehicles are caught and the people removed, they are sunk by our Navy or Coast Guard because they are considered to be a "hazard to navigation". I think this is a shame. I wish we could bring these vehicles to the US as a symbol of peoples' desire for freedom.

Thousands upon thousands of illegals flow over the southern (and northern) border each day and nary a finger is lifted to do anything about it.
But a handful of Cubans float near the shore and and all out effort is made to intercept them.
Makes perfect sense.
