Lott doesn't want the principle of the filibuster to be compromised. Maybe he has too much Mississippi memory in him or something. The guy is a bit of a slick operator, too slick.

The Republican Party is about as cohesive now as a bucket of marbles dropped from a helicopter on a rain slicked freeway !

If so, it is another selfish act that we see a lot of lately. Maybe McCain has some communicable disease that he is spreading to the rest of the Senate, Nospinemefirstitis.

Nothing new. Lott's been a waste of oxygen since he decided to roll over on the Clinton impeachment, and more than likely prior to that. Time for him to go. Mississippians, please do your duty.

That is typical of Lott. Did the same thing after he promised Don Nickles from OK if he didn't challenge him in 2000, he would step aside in 2002. Lott called for an early vote in 2002 to stop Nickles -- have absolutely zero respect for Lott!

I agree, these people are such disgusting hypocrites! They keep saying this is all for the good of the senate, and we must uphold the great traditions of the senate, when in reality it's all about upholding their own butts!

MOAB to the Quislings!!!!

I cannot for the life of me find reason in what the rinos are doing. Why would they hurt the party that elected? Are they so full of themselves they aren't even thinking about their next election?

Everyone in the Mississippi Republican Party is either in bed with Lott or they are afraid of him. It's not an understatement, while he was Senate Majority Leader, he had the power of the purse, and that power of the purse basically has made everyone in Mississippi complicit with him.

Also, Lott's base is an area I'm very familiar with. I live 30 miles to the east of his adopted hometown, where he is regarded as a veritable saint. South Mississippi is also the most Republican portion of the state of Mississippi. Combined, it can produce many more votes than Rankin County can ever dream of. South Mississippi has also benefitted tremedously from Lott's tenure in Congress.

One of the bases that the BRAC wants to close is Pascagoula NS (Pascagoula is where he lives). The reason that station exists is because Lott brought it there. In military terms, I don't know of any useful purpose it serves, it exists because a powerful Senator was it's backer

Ingalls Shipbuilding, the largest employer in the state of Mississippi, located is Pascagoula, has gotten the better part of Navy Contracts since 1996, including the contract to repair the U.S.S Cole.

In 2000, Lott actually won Hinds County. Hinds County is where Jackson is located, and at the time it was 55% black (granted, I don't think he's winning it in 2006)

The point I'm trying to make is, Trent Lott is the safest incumbent in American history, and no one is going to run against Lott, because Lott has the power to make their lives miserable, and well, Lott decides who gets what in Mississippi, in terms of federal money and everything else.

If ya'll really want to go after someone, Lindsey Graham is the man to go after, because Lindsey Graham can actually be defeated, Lott can't.

The only way Lott could be defeated is if they caught him in bed with a dead girl or a live boy (ok, thats an Edwin Edwards quote, but its very true here)

Hopefully, when their next voting cycle comes around...the voters will remember.
