Bill Clinton says Democrats have a "responsibility to treat the Republicans with respect" and to try to work with them on the issues -- but he also told Fox News's Greta Van Susteren, "as those cannons are fired at us, we have to stand up and fight back."
And that's just what Clinton's wife Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton did on Monday -- giving what the New York Times called a "starkly partisan" speech at a New York City fundraiser on her behalf.
Although her husband has spent time with -- and frequently has praised -- both President George W. Bush and former President George H.W. Bush in recent months, Sen. Clinton on Monday took a different tack.
"There has never been an administration, I don't believe in our history, more intent upon consolidating and abusing power to further their own agenda," Sen. Clinton told a "Women for Hillary" fundraiser on Monday.
"I know it's frustrating for many of you, it's frustrating for me. Why can't the Democrats do more to stop them (Republicans)?" she asked.
Sen. Clinton said she stays awake at night, "thinking about all the mistakes and the wrong direction and all the bad decisions being made in Washington.
"I can tell you this: It's very hard to stop people who have no shame about what they're doing. It is very hard to tell people that they are making decisions that will undermine our checks and balances and constitutional system of government who don't care. It is very hard to stop people who have never been acquainted with the truth."
Former President Bill Clinton has said his wife is concentrating on re-election to the Senate in 2006 -- not yet thinking about a presidential run in 2008. But many people on both sides of the aisle see a grand plan afoot.
"We cannot give them (Republicans) another two years of majority," she said on Monday. "We cannot give them another four years after that."
As reported by the New York Times, Sen. Clinton called the House of Representatives "a dictatorship of the Republican leadership," and she said some Republican leaders "honestly believe they are motivated by the truth, they are motivated by a higher calling, they are motivated by, I guess, a direct line to the heavens."
She also criticized the Washington press corps for not standing its ground: "If they're criticized by the White House, they just fall apart." Sen. Clinton said the press needs to "toughen up."
The breakfast fund-raiser, held at a New York City hotel, raised about $250,000 for Sen. Clinton's Senate re-election campaign, the newspaper said.
Why can't Democrats stop the Republicans? You can't stop the unstoppable.
No, Hillary. You stay awake at night because blood-sucking vampires like you sleep during the day.
some Republican leaders "honestly believe they are motivated by the truth
Interesting comment.
If that is such a bad motivating factor, Id be interested in asking Hillary what motivates her.
Hey Hillary, do you think the voters might have something to do with it?
With a grille like his I'll bet he dated Mary Palm and her 5 sisters...alot.
I was wondering the same thing. What did he do with all his time? He certainly wasn't studying. He looks like Fred Gwynne.
He looks like one of the characters from Animal House - the one who got fragged by his troops during the credits...
That sounds kind of like the Klintons' play book for getting where they are...
At the moment, certain Pubbies seem to be falling for a "Good Clinton/Bad Clinton" strategy.
Newt seems to not even notice the difference. Veddy veddy strange, Monsieur!
Hehe
Rush is right. Whatever the Democrats are guilty of, they accuse the Republicans of doing.

how can she expect anyone to take her seriously or respect her when she makes comments like that.

Remember: ** THE LEFT ALWAYS ACCUSES THE RIGHT OF DOING EXACTLY WHAT THEY DO **
Thanks, I needed that.
Hillary: "They must be stopped. It doesn't matter that the majority of the people elected them. They must be stopped anyway."
