Some Immigrants Are Offering Social Security Numbers for Rent (Illegal Immigration)
NY Times ^ | 6/7/2005 | EDUARDO PORTER

Posted on 06/06/2005 8:57:25 PM PDT by nj26

Gerardo Luviano is looking for somebody to rent his Social Security number.

Mr. Luviano, 39, obtained legal residence in the United States almost 20 years ago. But these days, back in Mexico, teaching beekeeping at the local high school in this hot, dusty town in the southwestern part of the country, Mr. Luviano is not using his Social Security number. So he is looking for an illegal immigrant in the United States to use it for him - providing a little cash along the way.

"I've almost managed to contact somebody to lend my number to," Mr. Luviano said. "My brother in California has a friend who has crops and has people that need one."

Mr. Luviano's pending transaction is merely a blip in a shadowy yet vibrant underground market. Virtually undetected by American authorities, operating below the radar in immigrant communities from coast to coast, a secondary trade in identities has emerged straddling both sides of the Mexico-United States border.

The number of people participating in the illegal deals is impossible to determine accurately. But it is clearly significant, flourishing despite efforts to combat identity fraud.

"There are people who live in Mexico who take $4,000 or $5,000 in unemployment in the off season," said Jorge Eguiluz, a labor contractor working in the fields around Stockton, Calif. "They just lend the number during the season."

The deals also generate cash in other ways. Most identity lending happens within an extended family, or among immigrants from the same hometown. But it is still a hard-nosed transaction. Illegal immigrant workers usually earn so little they are owed an income tax refund at the end of the year. The illegal immigrant "working the number" will usually pay the real owner by sharing the tax refund.

I wonder if they'll "rent" their SS numbers to al Qaeda as well?

It's just unbelievable how unconcerned our leaders are about the security and sovereignty of our nation and its borders.

The guard bees at the hive entrance should have stung him to death when he tried to gain entry.

Articles like this will become more frequent in the Times.

Madame Hillary will pick up the battle cry right on cue.

well one more 9/11 type terrorist attack and GWB and the rest of the elected clowns can bend over and kiss their legacies good byyyyyyyy...
because Americans will have been totally fed up with the government's incompetency and failure to secue the borders and deport the illegals. One more attack and the camel jockeys in this country will have to pack up bag and baggage and go back to whatever hellhole they came from.

After years of sympathy for "undocumented migrants", the Times has recently taken a sharp turn to the right, and is tripping over itself to highlight the social costs and security problems associated with illegal immigration.

So obviously talking points have already been issued by the Queen Bee (HRC '08), and her underlings at the NYT are falling into line.

The amazing thing is that the NYT and the rest of the liberal media seem to find these types of stories all very cute.

Surely someone at SSA will be checking on Mr. Luviano's account sometime tomorrow?

Way back when, when I was a little girl...

I grew up in NJ. My father was an elevator repairman. Most of his call routes were the hospitals.

In the 70's there was a strong influx of Arabs coming here just to have babies then leave to go back to the Mid East. I remember hearing Saudi Arabia the most...But I don't remember the other names.

Agreed. I fear - and predict - that the secondary fallout from another 9/11 will initiate a hot civil war along ideological/cultural lines that'll make the Hatfields and McCoys look like a neighborhood squabble over the former's dog being caught pissing in the latter's begonia bed. The elements are in place. A hot enough flame will assuredly ignite a very short fuse.

It's just unbelievable how unconcerned our leaders are about the security and sovereignty of our nation and its borders.

They're too busy paying off their campaign promises to their slave labor big business donors to worry about things like sovereignty and borders.

This is the massive bottom of the ice berg! The long term cost of wetbacks working in the US are the false claims for vested benefits, based on lies and fake data.

Out in the future, Mexicans will claim pension benefits based on work records in the US. Only, they'll claim that employers didn't pay taxes or withhold /remit taxes. Left wing politicians/judges will rule that, because of the complicity of employers, wetback claims will have to be accepted at face. So, three seasons of work as a lawn mower will give some Mexican a maximum social security pension.

An account number, no matter who used it, will drive a full pension but ten numbers to the same Mexican with different numbers, will drive a fortune.

The secret shame of our non-immigration policy is the claim against it that will be made in the future.
