If I am a bit sensitive, it is only because I find it stunning that so many on this forum have either closed minds, have made up their mind before the fact, or just don't bother to think for themselves but are content to be party line puppets

Huh? I think you're over-reacting. No one has closed minds re the issue of oil dependency, we just think the show was poorly written, had horrible acting, and invoked sophomoronic leftist propaganda.

If you're mindful of oil dependency, why does the show constitute leftist propaganda?

As to the production values, well you might be comparing it to an A movie. This was a made for t.v. special whose budgets are substantially less by far, and are dimensionally more flat to fit the t.v. medium (as well as audience).

" What is it about fictionalized docudrama that people on FR don't get? The production was speculative and meant to both provocative and entertaining, although apparently not to you."

Ok, so in this response, we're not supposed to take it seriously as though it were a real problem, but in other posts we're supposed to take it seriously?

Get a freaking grip.

I'm really not responsible for other posts...sometimes not even my own ;-)

While the problem IMHO is real (finite world = finite resources), the production utilized no small measure of hyperbole to drive its point home.

Because of the way the show presents the issue. They discredit themselves (and thus the issue) the same Amnesty International & Global Warming has. Its a mockery of itself, thus giving the audience reason to discount the whole issue as unrealistic trype based on hysterical fear-mongering.

In Moore's case, fabrication would be a more apt description ;-)

I haven't followed this Daemon/Affleck Project closely but I did see a small part of one episode; while I wasn't terribly impressed with the result, I certainly appreciated the motivation behind the project and its intent.

I used to get e-mails inviting me to participate in the project but I never thought that my writing talents (such as they may be) lent themselves well to this particular type of endeavor.

Actually, it was a terrible show, and I usually enjoy the disaster genre. But "Oil Storm" was nothing more than preachy Leftist dogma masquerading as an entertainment program. It was boring and poorly acted, too boot.

"I could only watch a few minutes of it, looked like a typical liberal attack on big oil, not worth wasting my time."

It wasn't. DH was watching it, and I came in about 30 minutes into it. I figured out right away (by the somewhat poor acting, and the TV peeps were phoney-baloney) that it wasn't real, but I gave it a shot...because it was hot as h#ll here and I had paperwork to catch up on, and I just felt like vegging, so it seemed I could devote half a brain to it...

I thought they spread the blame around to those that would be caught up in this. The Energy Secretary (Oil Czar), the Coast Guard (limiting the number of ships in the harbor at one time), the average citizen getting his undies in a bunch and turning violent about having to wait in line for gas (I was a teen in the 70's; thank you President Carter!), the terrorists striking the Saudi refineries to cripple us even further, the soldier/son dying when said refinery was blown up, how the neighborhood was suddenly a Ghost Town...

Frankly, for all the goofy production, I thought they hit the high points that no one wants to talk about...

Thanks. You know, with a population approaching 300 million here in the U.S., you'll find plenty of people who agree -- and disagree -- with your point of view re "Oil Shock." As someone who enjoys the disaster movie genre, I will say one thing positive about it. It's better than that awful "Day After Tomorrow," or whatever that Whitley Strieber-Art Bell turkey was called.

It was just too absurd to even imagine.

I agree. It was such commie tripe! I gave it three thumbs down on Tivo. I suspect that it was written by a brainwashed, double digit IQ, teenager who couldn't even keep the story line straight. Characterized our nations farmers as Federal aid addicted, spineless collectivists, perpetually suckling at the Federal tit. And the urban dwellers as poor, helpless, suffering to death cows, waiting to die from the cold and disease. And of course, the US as invading the OPEC nations to access "cheap oil".

All those invested in this production must be ready to commit suicide from the nightmares they see in our future. So sad!

I could be weird but was I the only person that liked this? I do agree that there was some things that were left out but when you only have about 90 minutes or so to tell your story, you're going to have to leave some things out. The message of the film is (in my opinion) the most important part of the film. We have to find another option to oil. We have the technology. Of course just like any type of technology, a hybrid car or maybe a car running on H2O would take some time to get popular. It would be expensive too. But we can adapt without oil. I don't really feel like typing alot so I'm done. But I'll leave you with this... If something doesn't change in this country... in this world, we are going to go into some very hard times in the next 5-10 years.
