Thanks for all the pings , but please ping me in 6 years when his parole is turned down.
I used to think the same thing, then I moved here. I've seen some strange things since January. Yes, it's tough to find a good beer here, or even a decent cup of coffee, but punishment for crime is all over the board in these parts.
We had a guy who was in charge of managing the Utah Educational Savings Fund, and decided that he needed to make as much as he did on his old state job. He filched $85,000 from it, to make up the difference. When he was caught (and as a CPA, he should have well known better), he was only given 30 days in jail. Yes, he had to make restitution, but his last name is "Hatch", same as a senator you might well have heard of.

He should fry!
Utah's laws need to be seriously reviewed and rewritten for cases like these. God help and forgive me, but if I was her father, I am afraid the parole board would not have to worry about it and I would be on trial myself as in "A time to kill". I pray I am never put in such a position, but an animal like this would never get the chance to become a repeat offender.
I think he should die for what he did. But I don't have sovereign power over the people of Utah, so I guess the sentence will just have to do.
He is very lucky this wasn't my daughter.
Because everyone in Utah who commits this same kind of crime would be sentenced to 6 yrs to life.
It appears that Utah does have the death penalty, but Hackings type of murder apparently does not fit into the Aggravated murder catagory.
Utah death penalty (Capital Offenses: Aggravated murder) Utah Code, Arrgavated murder
And the death penalty can include the Firing Squad. The six years to life sentence essentially hands the sentence over to the parole board. They are VERY conservative. He will never get out.
I am just shocked. I know plenty of people in Utah and know the people there are willing to put people/animals like this down...this sentence is just beyond my comprehension.
Does it mean that Lori's family will have to re-live this torment every X years, to keep the parole board from releasing him?
Yeah, sweet deal.
Now, if they give a rat's ass about the poor girl they'll have to go protest at parole hearings for the next 40-50 years?
That's it? So what does that translate into? Time served?
Agree as well....sometimes it's just better to say not guilty and let the rabid polecat walk back into the daylight one last time.......

Stay safe ....
MizSterious, thanks so much for all the pings on this sad case. Godspeed to you. JM
Printed.
Yer a nut!!
However, yer our nut!
Funny. LOL.
Thanks for all of the pings.
I hope the next one is him accidentally dieing in prison.
We need more folks like you.
Utah has the death penalty, just very strict guidelines. I read in the local newspaper that the parole board will evaluate him in six months to set a parole date, the judge recommends at least 20 years for a parole date. Hacking pled out, and unfortunately the guidelines for the death penalty weren't met in his case. Because of the notoriety of the case, I do not see him being released for at least 20 years. He has the baggage of being a liar, so the parole board will take a very close look at him at his parole hearings.
