High-End Cars Pulled Over in Run to Vegas

VANCOUVER, Wash. - Washington State Patrol troopers pulled over Porsches, Ferraris and even a Lamborghini on Interstate 5 this weekend as more than 50 drivers, many in luxury cars, set out on a five-day rally that involves driving from city to city to collect poker cards.

The 2005 Players Run began in Seattle and has stops in Ashland, Ore., San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego en route to Las Vegas. Drivers, who pay $9,800 to participate, collect playing cards along the way until they have enough for a poker hand. After they reach Las Vegas on Wednesday, they're treated to helicopter flights and rides aboard yachts.

Police said some participants were clocked at more than 120 mph on the Seattle-to-Oregon leg. Drivers veered between lanes, followed too closely and otherwise drove aggressively, forcing troopers to stop all traffic on the freeway with a rolling road block necessary to pull over the vehicles.

its amazing to me that they would put this on the internet. at least when brock yates was doing the real coast to coast rallies (there is supposed to be a movie remake of this?), he was discrete.

There are DVDs of several such runs ...both in the US and Europe. Good viewing (although I'd prefer being behind the wheel of a Bugatti Veyron kissing the ether above 200MPH).

Seems like an invitation to a bust. They say they encourage their participants to obey speed limits. Harumph.

In the 50s there used to be a Reno to Las Vegas race where the entry fee was $100k and it was a super hush hush deal and it was as winner take all.

I drive the I-10 past Palm Springs pretty often. The Porches, Ferraris, Vettes and other high end sports cars all do the speed limit while I cruise thru in my Silverado at 85mph. They must get pulled over a lot here.

In previous Runnings, generous donations to the California Highway Patrol resulted in a police escort the whole way and a two-day-long get-out-of-jail-free pass for the speeding pilotos. But when word got out about that, the police connection was quashed and we were all on our own.

Damned joy-killing bureaucrats.

best for them to save it for the track, although I saw someplace that some fellow in a carrera GT and his passenger died in a crash at a track event in california this past week.

Yeah, the movie "The Lively Set" was based in part on that race...
