BOSTON, June 4 - A majority of Harvard alumni believe that the university's president, Lawrence H. Summers, has done a good job over all and should not resign, according to a poll conducted for a new independent alumni magazine.

In January, Dr. Summers ignited a firestorm when he suggested that "intrinsic aptitude" could be one reason that there are few women in science and engineering. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences in March passed a resolution expressing a lack of confidence in Dr. Summers's leadership.

The majority of respondents to the survey, 62 percent, said they disagreed with Dr. Summers's statements, and 58 percent said they thought discrimination and upbringing, not aptitude, was the biggest factor contributing to the under-representation of women in science.

Asked whether Dr. Summers had diminished the university's reputation, 42 percent of respondents said yes, 28 percent said no, and 30 percent said they did not know or refused to answer the question.

Nearly two-thirds of respondents, or 63 percent, said Dr. Summers should keep his job, and just over one-half had a favorable impression of him and said he was a victim of political correctness. A spokesman for Dr. Summers declined to comment.

The telephone survey, completed by 402 alumni from April 23 to 27, was commissioned...

Hehe, good one. You know what would be fun? Ending up at some party that woman is at, standing just within earshot of her, and saying things like "Ahhh. Women should only be barefoot and in the kitchen..."

With luck, she might resemble the exploding Michael Moore in "Team America"!

Actually, the "lady" (Nancy Hopkins) who got distressed at Larry's speech is on the MIT faculty. She had pulled the same stunt over there a few years earlier:

http://www.nationalreview.com/goldberg/goldberg200501190846.asp

"Hopkins made a name for herself a few years ago by whining incessantly about gender discrimination at MIT. Indeed, she complained so much that she was able to finagle the chairmanship (sorry, the chairpersonship) of a committee tasked with finding discrimination at MIT. Shockingly, Hopkins found discrimination! Her report made her a hero in the pages of the New York Times, which dubbed her a "reluctant feminist" in the headline of its gushing profile of her."

"The report, which emphasized the feelings of anonymous female professors, found that discrimination manifested itself in a "stealth-like" way at MIT — which is generally PC code for "I'm not going to provide any evidence." The supposedly convincing evidence was kept secret, while the official report explained: "Discrimination consists of a pattern of powerful but unrecognized assumptions. . Once you 'get it,' it seems almost obvious."

thanks.

their words and actions are transparent to most now. they've done this stuff for decades.

i'm 6' 2" and athletic. apparently this disturbs some "equity" feminists who deliberately cross my path on campuses or in bookstores. sometimes they even bump into me.
