Good words, sir. Good words.
I've read more history books than you've had TV dinners, Pops. Countries that "don't last forever" are relics of the ancient world, when there was somewhere else to go when the empire falls. Planet is all full up now. Countries rise and fall in influence, which has happened to us in the last century (up) and is extremely likely to happen to us in the next century (down) if we don't watch ourselves. In extremis, they may change their form of government or be swallowed by a neighbor, which is not terribly likely to happen to us.
I'm sorry to dampen the dramatic hopes of people with an apocalyptic vision and a cellar full of MRE's, but the "cease to exist" option isn't on the table. In fact, it's arguable that global political movement is toward a more American approach (mostly because freedom works to the greatest good of the greatest number), and our biggest danger is letting some other nation out-American us.
Astounding. Someone who actually believes history will now change and countries will last forever. Wow. Show me some evidence, lad, to support your claim. Actual evidence, please.
For some reason, I doubt your claim regarding history books and MREs suck. My IQ is 155 and I am the author of 21 books. Been to 43 countries and travel the globe instructing people, organizations and pro-democracy governments how to stay alive in this new world. I trust you can match that. No? Oh.
You are young and unaccomplished, I suspect, with the latter likely being because you've never been out of your living room and are truly convinced of your superiority even though you you have been nowhere and done nothing to further the cause of freedom. You live in the cyber world where you can hide from the real and strike via key strokes.
Good luck with that.
Wake up and smell the cordite.
You first. Tell me where England went to. I walked the Ridgeway recently and everything seemed to be right where I left it.
Ummm...of course, the Ridgeway is in my Mom's livingroom now, obviously.

You aren't talking about the "American hemisphere" crapola, are you?
No, I'm talking about free markets and personal liberty.
You truly believe that because something exists now that it shall exist forever, despite no evidence to back up your belief.
You are far too simple.
Best of luck to you.
Noooo, I believe that because things of a kind have existed for millenia, predictions that all things of that kind die within centuries are ill-founded.
The republic that our founding fathers created has been converted to a democracy and started the death spiral that every prior democracy in history has experienced. Whenever the poor majority start voting to take away what the rich minority has accumulated, that rich minority moves on. Have you got your exit strategy?
Nobody is voting to do anything, we are the victims of judicial usurping.
Hey Gunny Bob,
Is this column an excerpt from your soon to be released new book, "Minefields to Microphones" coming this August 2005?
There is only one thing that can destroy this country.
The repealing of our Second Amendment rights. When that day comes, the police state will rise. And now you know why the ACLU wants our guns taken away.
What I have seen isn't good. The RINO's are more interested in the status quo than anything else.
I agree with you 90% of the way but the problem isn't external enemies. It is the internal cancer from within that is threatening us. The greatest powers fail from the inside out.
I am glad to see that people are worried for our country (as am I), but I refuse to let worry turn into fear. If I had lived in the 1970s and late 60s I would have thought the same way, and it took a great man named Ronald Reagan to help turn our country around.
The conservative movement is stronger today than it ever has been (since arguably the founding of the country). Unfortunately, success oft times breeds "progressive" thought and hard work, gumption and all the things that made America great fall by the wayside.
Things are not so bad in my opinion that we have reached the abyss (yet). And if we do, then perhaps that's a good thing. A little revolution now and then is not entirely bad :)
As long as there are people like those on Free Republic, there is hope for the future. And it appears as if God truly has blessed this country. Whenever we have faced a challenge, the right people seem to be in power.
I certainly wouldn't consider you a wacko - but I do understand why you'd say that. I think a lot more people have that fear than are realized right now, but due to the branding of such opinions, it's held quite close to one's chest.
"Of course, the left might try at any time to seize power. This is extremely unlikely to succeed in a nation where the 2nd Amendment is in force."
Ergo, the 2nd must be attacked, dismantled and otherwise undone at all costs.....according to those who would seize power, or so lull patiots into whiners that we criticize only from our couches.
GunnyBob wished you well, pal. Leave it be.
You're smart. We get that.
Give the man his due and back off. He wished you well.
