WCBS-FM Changes Oldies Format Without Warning Listeners (Fires ALL DJs, Including Mickey Dolenz)
ny1 ^ | 6/4/05 | NY1

Posted on 06/04/2005 11:06:20 AM PDT by NYC Republican

A fixture on the city's radio dial has quietly changed its format without warning.

WCBS-FM dropped the oldies format which had been its staple since 1972 at 5 p.m. Friday.

The station has adopted a format known as "Jack FM," playing songs from the 50s right up through today.

Neither the station nor owner infinity broadcasting gave listeners any warning the change was coming.

Published reports say station personalities such as former Monkee Mickey Dolenz, Cousin Brucie Morrow and Harry Harrison have all been fired.

Fans can still listen to the station's old format on its web site at www.wcbsfm.com as well as on AOL

This is really amazing. They just had a huge event, celebrating Mickey Dolenz' 100th show.

Jack FM is all over the country. it's here in Dallas and I heard it in Colorado. In New Mexico I heard a station that saounded very similiar called Fred FM with the same format. There aren't any DJ's, and the playlist is already programmed for months in advance. There was a news article somewhere about the sations but I forgot where I saw it.

I grew up listening to cousin Brucie and Harry Harrison back in the sixties, but on a different station. I can still remember the jingles with their names "Cou-sin Bru-cie!"

"Got to make room for a real oldie, Dan the man."

DAAAAN ING--RAHAM! Anyone who listened to WABC-AM in the 70s knows what that means.

Bruce Morrow is still on the radio? Wonder about some of my other favorites of the era: Vernon with a V, Oogie Pringle,...

This is not at all uncommon in radio. New ownership or management have occasoinally been known to literally come in while a program is on the air and replace the whole crew and format. There's less job security in radio than there is working in the buggy whip factory.

Not really..the station's ratings have been slowly dying over the years..The demographic that loves the station..and that music..is moving out of the area... It sucks..but that's life...<P.
Now, how many of you remember the Murray the K and the submarine race watchers...?

BEN FM is in Philly. It is okay for about 30 minutes. There are no On-Air personalities, which just seems odd.
