Syria fires Scuds over Turkey 'to taunt US'

By Tim Butcher, Middle East Correspondent
(Filed: 04/06/2005)

Syria has staged a defiant display of strategic firepower by test-firing Scud missiles for the first time in four years, Israeli security sources said yesterday.

The officials, citing intelligence data, said the missiles, using North Korean technology and designed to carry chemical warheads, were launched last week from northern Syria.

One missile was fired towards the Mediterranean, the Israeli officials said, and broke up over the Turkish province of Hatay, shedding debris over two villages.

Israeli security sources said Syria's attempt to fire a missile over Turkey, a Nato country, was intended as a snub to America.

Washington has led a fierce campaign against Syria over the past year, blaming it for backing insurgents in Iraq and leading the chorus that forced Damascus to withdraw from Lebanon.

It is believed Israel has acquired film footage of the launches, which involved two Scud D variants, with a range of 400 miles, and one Scud B, with a range of 190 miles.

There have been suspicions that Syria has been buying missile technology from North Korea, and Israel will analyse what advances it has made in terms of targeting.

Any evidence that Syria can accurately launch Scud missiles, possibly with air-dispersed chemical weapons, raises dramatically the likelihood of pre-emptive Israeli military action.

When Israel was hit by Scuds launched by Saddam Hussein's regime in 1991, it was persuaded not to retaliate by evidence that the missiles were inaccurate and had modest payloads.

America was silent about the latest Syrian launches, but Turkey confirmed that missile debris had landed around two villages in the southern province of Hatay.

The Turkish foreign ministry said Syria had assured it that the incident was "just an accident'' during routine military training.

Well, since a Koran wasn't desecrated by a member of the U.S. Armed Forces during this incident, then this won't make the front page news or the Sunday talk show circuit. /sacr

I think there will be a day of reckoning for Syria. To many warnings are being sent for there not to be.

You are right. Never forget the 4th ID.

I will never forgive France, after all we did for them, for what they did about the Libya air-space denial with Reagan.

Likewise, I will never forgive Turkey. After the billions and billions we gave them, and after protecting them all these years, they screwed us and cost us lives.

Why we continue to consort with despicable nations is beyond comprehension. Our national leaders are as crazy as France and Turkey is deplorable.

Syria shot a scud over Turkey to snub the US?

Whatever.

Someone needs to inform Syria, in the immortal words of Jim Croce:

Our president doesn't have the support to go into Syria. Not even in his own party. Everyone knows that.... including Syria.

Is there something that Syria knows (about sizing up Bush)that the rest of us have yet to learn?

Or could it be the "straw that breaks the camels back"?

Actually, the list should be who is not despicable. Of all the nations in the world, it is hard to come up with more than ten that are good and honorable friends.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Turks were teaming with Syria to taunt US. In fact, Syria enhanced its relationship with Turkey months ago. When our projectiles landed on Turkey long ago, there was a protest by the Turks, but I hear no news about protests against Syria for this case. I think the Turks have a great double standard to be soft on their anti-American Muslim brothers.

Well anyways, if they ever attempt it to land on Iraq, that will allow US and Iraq to fight together to raid Syria. Let them do it again.

Does anyone see a strange coincidence?

Weapons Equipment Missing In Iraq
Associated Press June 3, 2005
LINK

"UNITED NATIONS - U.N. satellite imagery experts have determined that material that could be used to make biological or chemical weapons and banned long-range missiles has been removed from 109 sites in Iraq, U.N. weapons inspectors said in a report obtained Thursday."

The UN says that there is some missing missile stuff in Iraq, (implies it is the US's fault), then a day later, the Syrians pop one off?

How about a couple of daisy cutters rectally inserted as a defiant display of strategic firepower from a B52 at drop zone altitude?

Syria gets it... our lame duck administration can't do anything about what Syria does. It's all politics

Oh please - GWB is far from a lame duck CIC - It is all about reality and you simply don't understand it (from your comments above).
