U.S. confirms Gitmo soldier kicked Quran
Arizona Daily Star - AP ^ | Jun 3, 2005 | ROBERT BURNS

By ROBERT BURNS AP Military Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon on Friday confirmed for the first time that a U.S. soldier deliberately kicked a Guantanamo Bay prisoner's Muslim holy book in violation of the military's rules for handling the Quran.

In other confirmed incidents, prison guards threw water balloons in a cell block, causing an unspecified number of Qurans to get wet; a guard's urine splashed on a detainee and his Quran; an interrogator stepped on a Quran during an interrogation; and a two-word obscenity was written in English on the inside cover of a Quran.

The findings are among the results of an investigation last month by Brig. Gen. Jay Hood, the commander of the detention center in Cuba, that was triggered by a Newsweek magazine report - later retracted - that a U.S. soldier had flushed one Guantanamo Bay detainee's Quran down a toilet.

The story stirred worldwide controversy and the Bush administration blamed it for deadly demonstrations in Afghanistan.

Last week, Hood disclosed that he had confirmed five cases of mishandling of the Quran, but he refused to provide details. Allegations of Quran desecration at Guantanamo Bay have led to anti-American passions in many Muslim nations, although Pentagon officials have insisted that the problems were relatively minor and that U.S. commanders have gone to great lengths to enable detainees to practice their religion in captivity.

Hood said last week that he found no credible evidence that a Quran was ever flushed down a toilet. He said a prisoner who was reported to have complained to an FBI agent in 2002 that a military guard threw a Quran in the toilet has since told Hood's investigators that he never witnessed any form of Quran desecration.

Don't worry, Bush will grovel and apologize yet again

You are so right.  We've lost it, we have totally lost control of this war.  Kicking a book is now newsworthy????

Between the loons 'teaching' in our schools, the traitorous MSM and the pacifistic left we are going to go down in flames unless someone in power stands up and says that this MUST end now.

Muslims only respect power and the will to use it. Their collective cultures and their religion are pretty authoritative yet.

Our cowtowing to their book when we are mostly Christians and Jews is viewed by them as subordinating our beliefs to accommodate them and more a weakness than an act of respect.

They would never do that. They scream Jew or Christian bastard or whatever term they have when they saw folk's heads off with pocketknives. I doubt they worry a lot about respecting the Bible or Torah....God forbid the Talmud too.

You and I are rather rational. You more than I of course but they are not....well maybe Turkey but they are apostate Muslims....and have their own rather sordid history too.

The best way to protect Americans and others abroad to me is to make Muslims terrified to wage war on us, not by protecting their book. And to make the zealots doubt themselves and their religion....their God to be exact. That is precisely what Pershing did in the Philipines more or less. He attacked them and their beliefs.

Now...do we have the will yet to do that?

No obviously, not yet so maybe you are right till then. I tend not to think so as a mean realist but you do raise a valid point worthy of contemplating. However....aside from Bin Laden wishing himself the new Caliph of Saudi, this is a religious war to them. We like to pretend it's not to us, but it is.....at a minimum if only by default..... We have been at war with these fools for 1300 years. The Fat Lady is nowhere in sight.

Bourbon is a great and very smart guy. I know he and his wife off this forum.

This is only the 2nd time I have been somewhat of a differing opinion than he here.

But Howie. thanks for saying concisely and briefly what took me way too damn long to meander thru when I tried in 187.

If we were truly tough, we wouldn't pretend to give a crap.

Yep.

Agreed, our bourbon is one brilliant guy.

I see his point too, but I just can't believe that we can show them respect or appease them. They're bloodthirsty and that Quron/Koran of theirs is filled with hate and violence.

Why kick a koran when you can kick a terrorist?

The solution is to remove all koran's.

No harm no foul. If it's ok for sports, its ok for prison.

Shut down Gitmo and send all the POWs to the Kennedy Compound in Palm Beach instead.

oh yeah.... the Pentagon is releasing this info without any pressure. Just because they want to.

I've never cared anything about this story... except to say that It's stupid that we even worry about such things. So try to be a little more accurate when you say "you all here".

Further more I never called you a newbie.... and don't really care what you think. Why are you pinging me??? Newbie :)

Whistleblower time--the other day I found myself without toilet paper and the only thing within reaching distance wa a copy of the Koran--exscuse me--Quran. Forgive me for touching off an international incident. On the plus side, my ass has never felt more blessed by Allah!

Does anybody see the irony. Our Country is bending over backwards ("thank-you sir, may I have another") to protect the religious rights of a group of people (the detainees) who use that religion to justify killing our people.

AP would argue that headline says nothing about a toilet either. Just that an unspecified incident involving the Qu'ran at Gitmo had been confirmed.

Know what you mean, but think the verdit would have to be "not proven", though with a raised eyebrow, of course.
