History professor Joan Hoff of Montana State University, an expert on the Watergate scandal, finds it interesting that Bob Woodward is claiming that he had a close relationship with former FBI official Mark Felt, now identified as Deep Throat, when Felt suffers from serious health problems, including dementia, and can't deny it. "It's just like when he said he interviewed [former CIA director Bill] Casey when Casey was comatose," she says.
Len Colodny, co-author of Silent Coup, about the "removal" of President Nixon, finds the identification of Mark Felt as Deep Throat to be rather remarkable: "A Deep Throat who can't talk."
The fact is, as AIM founder Reed Irvine documented, Woodward has been known to make things up. Woodward's Casey "interview" is a case in point. As Reed noted, "In his 1987 book, Veil, Woodward claimed he had interviewed William J. Casey, the CIA director, after Casey had brain surgery and could not speak intelligibly. Woodward didn't know that, and he made up an interview in which Casey is supposed to have spoken 19 intelligible words. It was clear that this was a falsification not only because of Casey's condition, but because his hospital room was guarded and Woodward was never admitted to it."

What does that have to do with Deep Throat and the Watergate investigation?
naaaaw
....While in the OLD..."Hoover's FBI"....UNDER Mr. Hoover,.....
....what religious denomination did Felt claim on his OLD FBI personal (for the record) FBI files?
....Felt may not 'claim' any today,...but,...for sure,...Felt claimed one WHILE UNDER 'service' to Mr. Hoover!!!!!
....exactly,....what does Felt's OLD file state for 'cover' purposes while 'faithfully serving'....'J'...?
....there is a real story here,....for sure!
....he was NOT Jewish,.....how about.....Mormon?
This is all just too convenient. I will ALWAYS believe that Deep Throat was a composite and even more...a creation by that absurd team of "journalists". Think of what would have happened if they had bloggers and the internet then! The whole thing would have blown up in their faces (think Dan Rather, and Newsweek!), and Nixon would have survived it. Who says their story is true? I never believed it all was. AND...the break-ins of all those Republican headquarters last year are far more serious, they represent a trend of the very same thing as "Watergate". Who cares though? NOT the media!
Ask anyone our son and daughter-in-law's ages if they care or know much about it, people in their 20's (30's too, maybe 40's?)...Not many! Just us oldies around 50 and beyond have a solid memory or connection it seems...and we have "moved on"! The media never will, not over a Republican anyway.
You're kidding, right?
No. Deep Throat's leaks were all related to the Watergate investigation.
I just have to wonder, after all these years, how many really care.......................
Can Woodward find out who Michael Jackson really is?
Yeah, W&B sold their Watergate papers to U of Texas for $5 million. They have made a bundle from books and speaking tours. Woodward's new book is being rushed into print for release in July. Watergate is the gift that never stopped giving.
Silent Coup is a remarkable book.
It takes "who said what" and evaluates for concurrency to figure out who was lying.
Dean doesn't come off well AT ALL as a result of their analyses.
"The whole thing would have blown up in their faces (think Dan Rather, and Newsweek!), and Nixon would have survived it.'
Actually this was pointed out years ago in the book "It Didn't Start With Watergate". I don't recall the author/s but they ACTUALLY COUNTED the anti administration headlines that had any bais in truth. A vanishing fraction of the stories the headlines represented were true, but the cumlative effect of all that "journalisim" was profound. Suffice it to say that in todays world Watergate would never have gotten traction.
Interesting. I thought as I heard and read about the friendship between Woodward and Felt how odd that a very senior person, number two or three at the FBI, would become a good friend and mentor (as Woodward called him) to a young man in his twenties, with whom he has no other connection, after sitting in a waiting room together one day.
Googled it: 'It Didn't Start With Watergate' by Victor Lasky, 11 bucks at Amazon
LOL...leave it to you...
Goodness, not a conspiracy to bring down a President!
< wink >
Yes, quite. But they were related to taking Nixon DOWN. Impeachment buzzed the day after the break-in. Alex Haig--whether he agreed or not with the break-ins (and there are rumors that he emphatically did NOT), would, I repeat, NEVER have contributed so much as a wink to hurting Nixon's ability to negotiate, to conduct foreign policy.
I bet he wrote most of it over 30 years ago. After all he would probably want to make sure he had a book ready to go to the printers if he were to die unexpetedly.
Actually Nixon negotiated a successful withdrawal from Vietnam from a position of strength, and left the South Vietnamese in control. It was the Democrats controlling Congress (and their allies in the press) that caused the mayhem later when the Viet Cong began violating the negotiated treaty. They tied Nixon's hands and refused to fund any military support to force the Vietcong back across their lines.
The obvious lack of US support or intent to enforce the treaties cause an internal fear and a self-fulfilling collapse on the part of the South, as everyone turned tail and ran.
Watergate hurt Nixon politically, but it was the very partisan Congress and the press that caused the US to abandon Vietnam after fighting to a near victory. The abandonment of the South Vietnamese would have happened with or without Watergate.
Read it in Nixon's own words. One of the best books on Vietnam ever written was Nixon's book, "No More Vietnams." I'm sure its available on paperback through Amazon or elsewhere.
I believe that you are right....plus, after hearing John Dean this afternoon on Court TV, I'm convinced that certain specific information obtained by Woodward & Bernstein could not have possibly come from anyone BUT one of four people inside the Nixon White House who knew about the tapes. Mark Felt didn't know about the tapes and couldn't have known. So, there would have been only a maximum of 4 W.H. staffers who knew.
This doesn't invalidate your hypothesis that DT was a composite. The WH connection was just one of many information sources, if your theory is correct.
To me, the most compelling part of Kincaid's article is that Woodward blatantly invented a conversation with Bill Casey which was impossible!....so it's the old adage, "Fool me once, and it's 'shame on you.' Fool me again, and it's 'Shame on me.' " Woodward has done enough fooling and concocted enough implausible scenarios, informants and interlocutors.
He's not credible, and neither is this poor, doddering gentleman, Mark Felt, who looked like nothing so much as a participant in a PUBLISHERS CLEARING HOUSE commercial when he made his grand entrance onto the media stage! The only thing missing were the balloons.
Char :)
IMHO The gigs up and we are at War, I am getting mad and scared.
