Energy Officials Warn of Summer Electricity Woes (FERC comments at SF electricity conference)

California and federal energy officials warned Thursday that the electricity system in Southern California would face hard times this summer, especially if the weather was unusually hot, and that next summer might be even rougher.

The southern half of the state "is the worst electricity supply situation in the entire country," Joseph Kelliher, a member of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, said at an electricity conference in San Francisco.

"It's indisputable that there are problems, and some problems have remained for some time," he said.

FERC Chairman Patrick H. Wood III, reflecting on the chaotic blackout days of the California energy crisis in 2000 and 2001, expressed disappointment.

"I thought we would be further along after four years," he said. "It's a bit disheartening, quite frankly, to see we're looking at a potentially tight summer and maybe two."

Just think GReen.. and you'll understand why California is always behind the 8 ball, energy-wise.

This is a pile of crap. California received 122% of rainfall - full reservoirs, rivers at capacity, etc. If these lying bastardos would fix the decrepit power plants they have and update the hyrdrogeneration system, we could even SELL energy to other states!

FERC is a big part of the problem too. Abolish FERC - then California can get its energy problems sorted out by itself.

There are transmission constraints between hydro generating areas and LA/SD metropolitan areas. So hydro alone will not solve Cal's woes. There are many other issues beyond transmission constraints, but oprobably the largest one is CA's insistence on not building any baseload power plants - which are coal or nuke - because of NIMBY attitudes and Green/Socialist/Environut policies. No generation plus no ability to import = no power.
