NYC-bound Virgin Air Flight 45 squawking Hijack code; being diverted to New Brunswick, Canada
ABC News | 6-3-5 | ABC News

Posted on 06/03/2005 7:25:05 AM PDT by Petronski

The pilot says the hijack code is an error and the plane is secure, but naturally the authorities are not trusting him.

I wish that I had never clicked on to this post. My family is returning from London on Tuesday. I was already nervous.

Plane is down. No video of the landing.

In the most respectful way, I disagree. *Anything* and *everything* will be "posted on the web" if everyone did it. The more we share online, the more the average person is going to know. Yes, it can be easily found online, but loose lips do sink ships. Why make things easier, is all?

Sitting is right. And out of gas. Jacques has plenty of gas but I don't think it's the right kind.

When you remove from the normal code assignments the 75xx, 76xx, 77xx series, you've removed 192 from the pool of 4096.

but it really isn't that bad: what they do is give a controller a set of local codes, say 100 of them. His neighbor sectors get similar, but different codes. These are codes he assigns to random pop-up traffic requesting advisories.

When an aircraft is on a longer trip (files a flight plan, or otherwise indicates to the controller a distant destination), the code assigned is from a different, and more globally appropriate code group.

And the other aspect to this: 90%+ of air traffic is regular old VFR not requiring a specific code, and thus ALL these aircraft share the 1200 code.

Plane is down.

Ooooh, let's not say that.

Let's be careful to say "Plane has landed."

Yes. That's one code I would not want to play around with!

You my good man are excatley correct. Wake turbulence behind a "H/747/Q" Heavy 747 can send a small plane for a loop.

7500 - hijack 7600 - radio failure 7700 - inflight emergency I don't know if there's others or not..

7007.....spy onboard?

A couple of other possibilities.....

7711...someone onboard has the munchies

7666....Hillary's onboard

7812.....pilot had the fish also

I can empathize; mine are returning from a trip to Ireland on Thursday.

I'm sure this will turn out to be nothing though.

It is not difficult at all to have this happen. It happens on a fairly regular basis. No big deal.

To: Trust but Verify

"Heavy" means it's in the same class as a 747.

Interesting information! One hardly ever sees base 8 numbers anymore since they do not fit evenly into 8, 16, and 32 bits.
