18-Wheeler Carrying Explosives Rolls, Shuts Down Busy Interchange
SAN ANTONIO -- An 18-wheeler that may be carrying 3,000 pounds of explosives rolled Friday on the Northeast Side, prompting authorities to shut down Interstate 35 in both directions and ordering an evacuation.
The big rig rolled near the Interstate 35 and Loop 410 interchange near the Randolph Boulevard exit at 7:30 a.m.
Fire department spokesman Randy Jenkins told KSAT 12 News that the explosives are used to initiate other explosives. Jenkins also said that the truck's manifest, a document that details a truck's cargo, also indicated that the big rig was carrying ammonium nitrate, which is very explosive.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Both directions of Interstate 35 were shut down and traffic was backed up for miles.
A ½ mile radius around the scene was evacuated.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: ""It's going to take a while," said San Antonio Fire Department spokesman Randy Jenkins. "This is a controlled situation. We don't want people to feel like there will be a quick explosion out here. That's not going to be the case."
The big rig was headed northbound on Interstate 35 when the driver lost control after he took the curve to the Loop 410 interchange too fast."
