The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Threat Matrix - Daily Terrorism Threat
Threat Matrix: U.S. Terrorism
Expert: Al-Qaida Has Presence In South Florida
Full Story

MIRAMAR, Fla. -- Despite the massive federal, state and local law enforcement effort to stop terrorists from entering the United States, there is no strong evidence of how well it is working.

Many experts are concerned that there are plenty of terrorists or sympathizers already in the country who have been here for years. Some are even citizens.

The Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers were the first wave and now the increasing number of arrests seems to signal a second wave of terrorism in South Florida.

18-Wheeler Carrying Explosives Rolls, Shuts Down Busy Interchange

SAN ANTONIO -- An 18-wheeler that may be carrying 3,000 pounds of explosives rolled Friday on the Northeast Side, prompting authorities to shut down Interstate 35 in both directions and ordering an evacuation.

The big rig rolled near the Interstate 35 and Loop 410 interchange near the Randolph Boulevard exit at 7:30 a.m.

Fire department spokesman Randy Jenkins told KSAT 12 News that the explosives are used to initiate other explosives. Jenkins also said that the truck's manifest, a document that details a truck's cargo, also indicated that the big rig was carrying ammonium nitrate, which is very explosive.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Both directions of Interstate 35 were shut down and traffic was backed up for miles.

A ½ mile radius around the scene was evacuated.

Out of town for the week and a big event happens almost in my back yard (Lodi, CA - 30 minutes away from me).

The reported targets (hospitals, shopping centers) worry me and IF the training camp was a truely AQ run we must stop and think. AQ's previous operations were against a single event - spetacular high casuality targets. However, these targets are more inline with current terrorist operations in Israel and Iraq. These could be linked to multiple, small level attacks throughout the country with a cumulative impact greater than 911, creating fear that no place is safe.

With that said, such attacks would likely generate even greater backlash against the moslem community than 911 did. They have spent considerable money portraying the moslems in America as good folk. However, they are a tight community and you know darn well that many of the 2500 moslems in Lodi KNEW what these guys were up to.

BREAKING NEWS
YERMO — A developing incident in Yermo (east of Barstow) has residents being evacuated.

According to Union Pacific spokesman, the evacuation, in a two-mile area, is under way at the request of the Defense Department. He says the agency is reacting to evidence that a seal was tampered with on a car carrying a Navy rocket motor.

The car remains on the tracks. A spokesman for the sheriff's office says a couple hundred people were evacuated. We will bring you more on this developing story as new information becomes available.

Navy Sets Up Safety Perimeter Around Train Car Carrying Missile Part
A portion of Yermo (east of Barstow) was placed under lockdown Friday morning after the Defense Department found evidence that a seal on a train car had been tampered with.

The US Navy set up a safety perimeter around the railroad car, which contains the first stage of a Trident nuclear missile, after someone tried to break into the car early Friday morning. The car is located at Yermo, California, northeast of Barstow. Because the missile is fully loaded with solid fuel, the Navy said it is also sending an explosives team to the site.

Navy officials said the actions were being taken as a precaution and there was no danger of an explosion and that the first stage of the intercontinental missile contains no nuclear warhead.

Navy officials said someone cut the lock on the outside of the railroad car, setting off a series of alarms which apparently drove the intruders away. Bolt cutters were found on the ground next to the car.

But Navy officials say the missile itself is encased in two more layers of protection and the perpetrators never reached the missile itself.

U.S. Firm Fined for Illegal Exports

A California engineering firm has agreed to pay $700,000 for violating U.S. export rules by selling equipment to nations of proliferation concern without a license, the San Bernardino (Calif.) Business Press reported yesterday.

The U.S. Commerce Department determined that Wilden Pump and Engineering Co. shipped special pumps to Iran, China, Israel, Syria and the United Arab Emirates. The machinery, designed for use in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, could be used to create biological or chemical weapons.

The department requires companies to receive an export license before shipping such equipment to those countries.

“The size of the penalty assessed to Wilden is due to the significant number of violations, many of them with knowledge that the shipments were destined to an embargoed country,” said the Commerce Department in a statement.

The department said Wilden committed 71 Export Administrative Regulation violations between 2000 and 2003. Wilden shipped pumps 26 times without the required license, according to the department, and on 22 of those occasions Wilden shipped the pumps knowing a violation would occur. The department also said Wilden made false statements on export documents 23 times (Jim Steinberg, Business Press, June 8).

Israeli Police Look Into Possible Theft of Heavy Water Production Information

Israeli police are investigating whether instructions on how to produce heavy water, which can be used to produce plutonium for nuclear weapons, were stolen from water company Gal-Al, Agence France-Presse reported today (see GSN, April 27).

Gal-Al has accused a rival firm of stealing the instructions by hacking into company computers.

Twenty individuals have been arrested so far in the “Trojan Horse” investigation into theft of Israeli nuclear secrets. Computers from television stations, public relations firms, car importers and car companies were all infiltrated by hackers.

The Trojan Horse investigation has spread beyond Israel to the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany (Agence France-Presse, June 9).

Sale of U.S. Fighter Jets to Pakistan Advances

The U.S. House of Representatives International Relations Committee yesterday voted down a measure to stop the sale of military equipment to Pakistan — including F-16 fighters jets — unless Islamabad provides access to former top Pakistani nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan, under house arrest for his role in setting up an international nuclear black market, Bloomberg reported yesterday (see GSN, May 26).

Representative Gary Ackerman (D-N.Y) introduced the measure, but James Leach (R-Iowa) and Tom Lantos (D-Calif.), the two senior committee members led opposition to defeat the amendment to the State Department funding bill 28-14.

“There is a recognition that Pakistan is an important ally on the global war on terrorism,” said Lantos, who argued during the debate that the measure would undermine Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf’s attempts to support Washington, a position unpopular in Pakistan (Tony Capaccio, Bloomberg News, June 8).

I imagine a rocket detonating in town is serious business....especially if it was coming on a train through LA to Vandenberg Air Force Base.
