URGENT: Chechen warlord killed
RIA Novosti ^ | July 6
Posted on 07/08/2005 2:24:31 PM PDT by jb6
GROZNY, July 6 (RIA Novosti) - Duk Vakhi Gubashev, a Chechen warlord known as Batya ("old man") has been killed in Chechnya, according to the Interior Ministry.
The provisional press center of the Interior Ministry in the North Caucasus said Gubashev was killed by federal special forces.
At the site, the police found and confiscated a load of weapons, ammunition and special communications devices, and also a written manual of how to make explosive devices, a phone book with foreigners' phone numbers, and a map of the Moscow subway.
The press center said Gubashev's rebels and a group of Arab mercenaries had mined roads, prepared terrorist attacks, and recruited local residents, particularly among young people.
The militants also opened new bases, kept in contact with other rebels, provided them with food and weapons, and also helped them get into mountainous regions of the republic.
The band operated in the southern mountainous areas of Chechnya

ABU MUSAB AL ZARQAWI (AMAZ) Clinton knows all about him and his associates. 9/11 Commission wasting the time. They have to ask some questions Mr. Clinton, Ms Albright and Mr. Holbrook HOW 9/11 HAPPENED????HOW!
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "AMAZ TERRORISTS CONNECTIONS AMAZ AND AL-QAIDA AMAZ is operationally an Al-Qaida's commander, appointed to orchestrate attacks in Europe. Even if his name did not appear in the UBL first circle in Afghanistan, AMAZ won his status inside Al-Qaida hierarchy by his ability to draw alliances with new organizations, thus expanding the reach of the network, and by successfully carrying out elaborated targeted terrorist actions. In 1999, Security officials in Jordan accused AMAZ and other radical activists of planning to attack on U.S. and Israeli interests and tourist sites during the Millennium celebrations, targeting the Radisson SAS hotel in Amman as well as other American, Israeli, and Christian religious sites in Jordan. At that time, AMAZ was not formally integrated in the Al-Qaida organization but he shared his detention from 1992 until 1999 with Abu Mohamed Al Maqdasi, close associate of Abu Qutada, and founder of several extremist movements, who is still jailed in Jordan."

Abu Qutada
Zarqawi's network was in Europe long before Iraq. Europe is his center of gravity, not Iraq. He projected his force into Iraq from Europe and regional countries, not vice-versa. That is why the order to take the network's activities to America in one of the last UBL tapes is a logical culmination of the AQ post-9/11 strategy.
Zarqawi is a longtime global terrorist and a longtime (pre-9/11) AQ WMD chief who set up shop in Iraq right before the war in anticipation of it (that is why Powell made Zarqawi central in his pre-war WMD case before the UN).
Saddam was harboring the AQ chem/bioweapons leader (or looking the other way as does Iran now). Zarqawi is/was not a regional or local thug who is/was trying to go global. All he had to do is take the feeder networks and channel some of them in the other direction. Even before the war, he made Iraq his "boot camp". Take a relatively educated European Muslim (who, incidentally, may look more "American" than "Arab"), give him a baptism of fire in Iraq, and if he survives and proves himself, he is ready for the greater task back home in Europe and possibly even deadlier ones in America.
The Zarqawi network has abandoned its strategic ambiguity and openly placed itself under UBL/Zawahiri/AQ authority. The utility of the plausible deniability of a separate organization had outlived its purpose. Just as in Iraq, new groups seem to pop up with new names every week to take credit for attacks, but the names don't mean anything, they are all cut from the same cloth, "Tawhid and Jihad" and "al Qaeda" (and whatever the next group calls itself) are six of one, a half dozen of the other.
Jihad is a global movement which has many surprising coalitions. Qaeda is just the "foundation" on which it started, but it is not so much the apex of an organizational hierarchy with lines of authority as it is the original "brand name" for an expanding global revolutionary movement. Like the early call a century ago to global socialist revolution, organizations in global Jihad spring up internationally and sometimes autonomously to advance the ideology. But just because they operate independently does not mean that they are divided.
For some reason, if someone says the "Bin Laden" network (or "al Qaeda") is attempting to launch an attack here, folks man the barricades.
But if you say that the "Zarqawi network" (or "Tawhid and Jihad") is attempting to launch an attack here, it sounds a bit ludicrous and not worthy of alarm.
Isn't that the point?
I plan on focusing on the continued expansion of the global Islamist insurgency in grad school, and have written several papers about it in the past.
I put a few of the papers on my site, but never linked them from here. The following was written for a National and International Security class, last December.
There are some very good survival tips in that article. Thanks for posting it.
Good post.
Not sure if it means anything yet. Just that uneasy feeling thing about Camden going on in my head.
Bridge walkway closed as security precaution Friday July 08, 2005
CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) The pedestrian walkway on the Benjamin Franklin Bridge is being closed indefinitely, effective Saturday, due to the heightened level of security on transit systems, the Delaware River Port Authority said Friday.
The bridge carries road traffic and the PATCO commuter rail line over the Delaware River between Camden and Philadelphia.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security placed the nation's subway, bus and rail systems on its second-highest alert level, code orange, in response to the Thursday morning subway and bus bombings in London.
The bridge's north walkway will reopen briefly on Sunday to allow riders in the American Cancer Society Bike-a-Thon to cross.

U.S. Terror Attack Ninety Days at Most
Counterterrorism expert Juval Aviv spoke with FOX Fan Central about what Americans can do to protect themselves in case of a terror attack.
Do you believe another terrorist attack is likely on American soil?
I predict, based primarily on information that is floating in Europe and the Middle East, that an event is imminent and around the corner here in the United States. It could happen as soon as tomorrow, or it could happen in the next few months. Ninety days at the most.
What advice do you have for individuals that have the misfortune of finding themselves in the middle of a terror attack?
Since mass transportation is the next attack, when you travel to work have with you, a bottle of water, a small towel, and a flashlight. What happened in London is exactly a point to look at. Those people who were close to the bombs died, then others were injured or died from inhaling the toxic fumes or getting trampled. The reason you take a bottle of water and a towel is that if you wet the towel and put it over your face, you can protect yourself against the fumes and get yourself out of there.
Dont be bashful. If your gut feeling tells you when you walk on to a bus there is something unusual or suspicious, get out and walk away. You may do it 10 times for no reason, but there will be one time that saves your life. Let your sixth sense direct you.
Try to break your routine. If you travel during rush hour everyday, try to get up a little earlier and drive to work or take the train when its still not full. Dont find yourself every day in the midst of rush hour. Terrorists are not going to waste a bomb on a half empty train.
What portion of the American infrastructure do you believe is at the greatest risk for a terror attack?
We have put all of our emphasis, right or wrong, on the aviation area. What has happened, in the last two to three years, based on information we have, the terrorists have realized that they cannot hijack a plane in America soon because the passengers are going to fight back. So they realize what they have been very successful with over the last 50 years in Madrid, London, Iraq, Israel: demoralizing the public when they go to work and when they come back from work.
What theyre going to do is hit six, seven, or eight cities simultaneously to show sophistication and really hit the public. This time, which is the message of the day, it will not only be big cities. Theyre going to try to hit rural America. They want to send a message to rural America: Youre not protected. If you figured out that if you just move out of New York and move to Montana or to Pittsburgh, youre not immune. Were going get you wherever we can and its easier there than in New York.
What more do you think the government can do to protect the public?
Number one, and this is the beef Ive had with Homeland Security for the last four years, is educating the public on how to deal with those types of events. Theres no education. Were raising the color code alert and that means nothing to anyone. Whether its green, yellow, pink, no one ever educated the public how to identify suspicious items or people. In Israel, so many of them [terrorists] have been apprehended just because people have phoned in. We dont have that training on campuses, schools, or kindergarten.
In Israel, its very popular right now [amongst terrorists] to put one device to explode and time another one for five minutes later when its all calm, people are getting up, and the rescue teams have responded. You need to know all those things and think about those things. The government must pursue that. Law enforcement will never have enough people on the street to detect things. We dont have that kind of manpower. Thats why the government must enlist the public.
Juval Aviv is a former Israeli Counterterrorism Intelligence Officer and President and CEO of Interfor, Inc. Mr. Aviv has also served as a special consultant to the U.S. Congress on issues of terrorism and security and is the author of Staying Safe : The Complete Guide to Protecting Yourself, Your Family, and Your Business.

Where was I reading just today that over 40,000 suicide bombers have been recruited for use on American soil???? Some terror organization made that announcement. If they can coordinate that kind of simultaneous strike all across the USA, it would make 911 look like a drop in the bucket.

MS-13 gang leader to be imprisoned, then deported
Corpus Christi Caller-Times/AP ^ | July 7, 2005

HOUSTON- The reputed leader of a violent gang with roots in El Salvador was sentenced to seven months in prison Friday for illegally re-entering the country, U.S. Attorney Chuck Rosenberg announced.
Lester Rivera Paz, 29, of Honduras, is expected to be deported after completing his sentence. He has been in federal custody since his arrest in February near Falfurrias. He was indicted in March on one count of illegal entry into the United States after being deported.
Rivera, who officials say has many aliases, including "El Culiche" or The Tapeworm, Eber Anibal Rivera Paz and Franklin Jairo Rivera-Hernandez, was the Honduras leader of the Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13 gang.
He is accused of masterminding a Christmastime bus massacre in Honduras that killed 28 people.
More than 200 gang members, including several in Texas, have been arrested nationwide since the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement launched a sweep in March.
