The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Threat Matrix - Daily Terrorism Threat
Threat Matrix: U.S. Terrorism
Expert: Al-Qaida Has Presence In South Florida
Full Story

MIRAMAR, Fla. -- Despite the massive federal, state and local law enforcement effort to stop terrorists from entering the United States, there is no strong evidence of how well it is working.

Many experts are concerned that there are plenty of terrorists or sympathizers already in the country who have been here for years. Some are even citizens.

The Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers were the first wave and now the increasing number of arrests seems to signal a second wave of terrorism in South Florida.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The Canadian Security Intelligence Service, counterpart of the CIA, said terrorist representatives are actively raising money, procuring weapons, ``manipulating immigrant communities'' and facilitating travel to and from the United States and other countries.

Besides al-Qaida, those groups include Islamic Jihad; Hezbollah and other Shiite groups; Hamas, the Palestinian Force 17, Egyptian Al Jihad and various other Sunni groups from across the Middle East, CSIS said."

Troops Track Terrorists, Prevent Attacks Over Holiday Weekend

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 4, 2005 – U.S. military forces spent the Fourth of July holiday weekend hunting down insurgents and stopping deadly bombs attacks throughout Iraq, military officials Baghdad reported.
At least 100 suspected terrorists, some of them foreign fighters, were detained today, as Operation Muthana Strike was launched. Some of the captured foreign fighters are from Egypt, officials said. The operation involved about 600 Iraqi army soldiers and 250 Task Force Baghdad soldiers, and was based on credible information from local residents' tips. It targeted terrorist safe houses in the neighborhoods adjacent to the west side of Baghdad International Airport.

Also today, Task Force Baghdad soldiers caught a man red-handed trying to detonate a roadside bomb along a highway south of the city. The military said soldiers patrolling in south Baghdad at around 2 a.m. noticed two sets of wires leading to the side of a highway. The patrol followed the wires to a bunker with an overhead cover and found a man with a spool of wire inside.

One of the two sets of wires was already burned, possibly indicating that someone already tried to detonate the bomb, officials said. The other set of wires led to a secondary bomb. The suspect was taken into custody for questioning.

A large weapons and ammunition cache was discovered inside a house west of Risalah today. U.S. soldiers from 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, found the cache during a random knock-and-search operation. Weapons and ammunition found included a U.S. body armor vest, four AK-47 assault rifles, two improvised rocket-propelled grenade launchers, two 82 mm mortars, three RPGs, 300 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, two 60 mm mortars and 10 grenades. Soldiers also found three new Iraqi police uniforms.

As many as 40 suspected terrorists were detained July 3 after attacking a joint U.S.-Iraqi patrol near Yusufiyah. The attack started when the patrol struck an improvised explosive device, then came under small-arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire. Five Iraqi army soldiers were killed in the attack, and three were wounded. Three local citizens also were wounded. There was no report of U.S. casualties.

The military also reported that several possible bomb attacks were foiled by the alert actions of U.S. and Iraqi soldiers. West of Baghdad on July 3, Iraqi army soldiers prevented a terrorist car-bomb attack after spotting the vehicle parked on the side of a major highway. Inside the vehicle, soldiers found wires around the steering column, four mortar rounds, one land mine and a radio with wire connected to the car. An explosives team safely detonated the car bomb. Citizens in the area said the driver had parked the car, got into a taxi, and left.

Meanwhile, Iraqi police at the Zuhor station seized a powerful car bomb July 3 from three suspected terrorists apparently preparing for an attack on the station. The car bomb included 20 rockets, 25 rocket-propelled grenades, 25 hand grenades, three bags of TNT and nine cases of mortar rounds. Iraqi police killed one of the suspects and captured another. A third suspect escaped.

Earlier in the day, Task Force Baghdad soldiers on patrol spotted a roadside bomb near a highway in northern Baghdad. The military said the bomb detonated prematurely, and no one was injured.

Task Force soldiers found two other roadside bombs hidden near major highways in western Baghdad.

Military officials in Iraq announced the capture last month of al Qaeda operative Imad Nassar Ahmed Amarah, also known as Abu Hamza, in Mosul. The Tunisian born terrorist specialized in importing suicide bombers, officials said. The military said Amarah ran a series of suicide bomber safe houses in the Mosul area for Abu Ibrahim, who was killed by security forces.

Amarah's job was to facilitate bringing suicide bombers and foreign fighters into the Mosul area.

Evidence collected indicated that more than 100 suicide bombers have passed through and operated out of his terrorist safe houses, officials said.

Officials Announce Capture of Doctor Who Aided al Qaeda

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 3, 2005 – An Iraqi doctor who helped plan and carry out terrorist attacks and cared for al Qaeda members wounded in fighting has been captured, military officials in Baghdad announced today.
Safa Ali Chiad Mashul, also known as Dr. Mushin or Abu Sayf, was arrested June 21 during a raid in the Baghdad area, officials said.

He worked for the recently captured Abu Aqil and helped plan, coordinate and conduct terrorist attacks and operations, including kidnappings in Baghdad, the military said. The doctor, who speaks fluent English, also treated kidnapped hostages and acted as an interrogator.

The military said Mashul also is responsible for receiving and disbursing ransom funds collected from the kidnappings.

In other news, an Iraqi citizen's tip helped Task Force Baghdad soldiers find and disarm a roadside bomb in eastern Baghdad on July 2. The civilian told soldiers that a five-gallon gas can was lying in the median of a major highway. There, soldiers found a 122-millimeter mortar round wired to a radio. The bomb was safely destroyed.

Task Force Baghdad soldiers detained five terror suspects during operations over the weekend. Two of the detainees are believed to be part of an attack on coalition forces in the southwestern Baghdad neighborhood of Jihad. The military said one of the detainees was seen running from a vehicle into a nearby house. The soldiers cordoned off the house and detained the suspect. Inside the vehicle, soldiers found a sniper rifle, pistols, a video camera and cell phones.

The military is investigating a fire that destroyed a CH-47 Chinook helicopter near Camp Ramadi July 2. All crew and passengers exited the aircraft safely, officials said. One crewman suffered minor injuries and was treated. The aircraft was assigned to Multinational Force Iraq and was used for resupply operations.

Baghdad Water Supply Authority crews have made temporary repairs to a damaged Karkh Water Treatment Plant north of Baghdad, and residents there should expect to have limited supplies of water flowing again today, officials said. The water flow to area residents was shut down after an explosion and fire at the facility July 1 damaged the plant's electrical distribution building and destroyed the electrical control mechanisms.

Iran's Nuclear Lies
MSNBC.Com - Newsweek ^ | July 11 issue | By Christopher Dickey

Posted on 07/04/2005 1:48:50 PM PDT by F15Eagle

July 11 issue - Beyond the antiaircraft-gun emplacements and the early-warning radar systems, and shortly before you get to the high concrete walls topped with concertina wire that surround Iran's Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, there's a large sign announcing that the facility welcomes guests. Like so much about the Iranian nuclear program, the signals are incongruous, contradictory and more than a little sinister.

If Iran is to be believed, then the world has nothing to fear from its nuclear program. The United States, Europe, Israel, Saudi Arabia and other oil producers nearby can rest easy, because the ayatollahs have no plans to threaten the region with atomic weapons or put nukes in the hands of terrorists. If Iran is to be believed, its only goal, repeated countless times, ratified in treaties and open to inspections, is to develop a completely independent ability to make nuclear fuel and use it to generate electricity.

But neither the United States nor Europe nor the United Nations is ready simply to believe Iran, at least not easily, and not without verification. Its record of concealment and deceit about its nuclear program goes back at least 20 years. Its extensive uranium-enrichment program was uncovered in detail only two years ago; its promise of "full disclosure" and "transparency" since then has been something considerably less. The election of a new hard-line Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, last month raises still more questions about how far Tehran can be trusted about its nuclear programs, if at all.

Iran's concealments have been as vast as a secret underground facility at Natanz that was being readied for 50,000 centrifuges to enrich uranium when it was exposed in 2002. They have seemed as small as some undeclared milligrams of plutonium from a research laboratory. In a cat-and-mouse game

"While Americans Celebrate Freedom: Berlin to Bulldoze History
Victims of Communist Violence Threaten to Chain Themselves to Monument"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "As Americans set off fireworks to celebrate independence and freedom tonight, a different scene will play out half-way around the world in Berlin. There, at the site of Checkpoint Charlie, where Americans stood guard for so many decades and confronted Communist tyranny, workers with heavy equipment and machinery will descend to tear down over 1,000 crosses, each individually dedicated to those murdered attempting to escape Communist dictatorship for freedom.

The planned demolition, intentionally scheduled for 4:01 AM to minimize visibility and public outrage, could develop into a massive public relations nightmare for the city of Berlin. A group comprised of victims of Communist violence has announced that they will chain themselves themselves to the crosses of murdered family members and friends before they see the city take them down."
