FDNY Routine Investigation; Middle Eastern Man Caught with Subway Maps
http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/news/wabc_061305_subwayman.html
A Middle Eastern man is being questioned after he was caught with others in possession of maps and sketches of the subway system. Police tell Eyewitness News, the man was caught during a fire department inspection of a previous violation at a bodega at 1173 Broadway in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn at noon yesterday.
The man was part of a group of five or six Middle Eastern men discovered during the follow-up inspection of a faulty sprinker.
When firefighters made a more thorough check of the building, they found drawings of city tunnels and subway entrances on notebook paper. There were also several fake identification belonging to the man taken into custody.
According to the FDNY, the men appeared to be acting suspiciously and attempting to hide the materials, so firefighters called the police.
The other men then fled the building.
Oh good, you have it I was just coming over to post the link to the thread.

Falls exactly in line with what they said was part of their planning stages.
Definately sounds like it could be surveillance of the system. It would have been nice if the story would have talked more about the fake IDs found on the person in custody. I'd be interested to know if they are state or country.
Not an Irishman, eh?
I'm shocked. (not)
Thanks, Ian.
Weird thing is, that picture of Hamid is different than the picture that I've seen several times on FOX news.
Now to find the pic of the person shown on FOX, because I've seen that person before.
Not much out there, the first thread on this says NY Post reported it. I wonder why Fox hasn't picked it up yet?

I'm not sure this is still active in that area of Brooklyn, but it is mere blocks from the place of arrest, also has an interesting history it seems..

Sect Had Roots In Brooklyn
...excerpts...
Early in the morning of April 19, 1979, Horace Greene was shot dead on a Brooklyn street as he went to open the day care center he ran.
It seems the sort of crime that should have been easy to crack. It was brazen, committed on a public street. The victim was a high-profile local activist.
The city offered a $10,000 reward. There was even a witness who provided a description of a bearded gunman wearing a Muslim robe and cap, recalls Bill Clark, a retired New York Police homicide detective.
...
The Ansaru Allah Community's growth, coincided with rising tensions in the United States between the government and Muslim groups, Clark noted.
"Police were very sensitive to observing the religious sanctity of institutions like this," he said.

See how close both those addresses are to the Navy Yard at the far left of the map?
Fox just announced the story coming up on the Brooklyn FD catch.
"Cumulatively, it is the worst outbreak ever," said J. Michael Hickey, the chief shellfish biologist for the state Division of Marine Fisheries. The agency ordered the federal waters closed to state shellfishermen late Friday [10 Jun 2005] and asked federal officials to extend the ban to out-of-state boats. The last red tide outbreak of a similar scope occurred in 1972.

I remember those guys soliciting for money on the subway when I was college, about 25 years ago. Glad I never gave 'em anything.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "USDA Says Suspect Mad-Cow Animal Was Born Before 1997 Feed Ban"
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "June 13 (Bloomberg) -- The animal involved in the latest possible U.S. mad cow case was born before August 1997, when the government imposed new feed rules designed to prevent the spread of the brain-wasting livestock illness, the Department of Agriculture said.
USDA spokesman Ed Loyd, while not providing the birth date or other details, said the animal was born before the U.S. and Canada banned the use of ground-up parts of cattle in livestock feed as a protein source. Scientists say cattle contract mad cow disease, clinically known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE, by eating infected parts of other animals.
That means that if tests confirm that the animal was infected, it may have contracted the disease prior to the 1997 ban, and that the feed restrictions have been working as designed, said Dan Vaught, a livestock analyst with A.G. Edwards & Sons Inc. in St. Louis."
Word play for birds, huh?
