While many MSM'ers (sorry, most) are lionizing this guy as "a hero," someone who "did what he had to do," something big is being missed.
Our side has pointed out that he authorized/engineered illegal breakins himself...
And that he turned on the Whitehouse because he didn't get the top FBI job. Now think about that....
Felt became a snitch because he didn't get something he wanted! He was an opportunist, plain and simple (and it runs in the family, apparently, as they shamelessly say they urged the old man to do it so they could all get some money). Yeah, a real hero.
But here's what I haven't seen....
If they had made him the head of the FBI, he WOULD NOT have turned on the Whitehouse.
In fact, as head of the FBI....
HE WOULD HAVE HELPED THEM BURY WATERGATE!
I do NOT think that book on the Bush admin. preparing for war was "complimentary."
So? Gordon Liddy once said that if you're on a train you don't care about the engineer's personality. The question you want answered is "can he drive the train." Nixon could. Who could possibly care that he was paranoid, conniving, narcissistic (I take exception to that one), anti-semitic (his law-partner & close friend Len Garment would disagree, as would several other Jews, though he was emphatically antiZionist).
I am not sure Woodward was on the Kerry campaign beat. He is an executive editor now. I wish he had been. By the way, I think the Washington Post is a fine newspaper, not as fine as the Wall Street Journal, but better than most.
OK, different strokes for different folks.
I know G. Gordon Liddy tells the story about the DNC having connections to a Call Girl operation across the street from the Watergate Complex, but why would the CIA be involved in a domestic issue like prostitution?
My brother likes to tell people that he is a registered dem .. but he is no Dem .. he's a Reagan Conservative
He also talks to people by telling them they won't be quoted and then he quotes them by saying things like "Oh, I was able to confirm what you said from other sources," so I quoted you.
And he's spent the last 30 years on TV, telling anybody who will listen that "No, this scandal/rumor/problem is not as big as MY story, Watergate."
His entire existence is tied to this one story - and now we find out he was just as dishonest in this story. And he's going to do or say whatever it takes to justify every word he's written about it for the last 30 years.
But he's in trouble now because we have access to information now -- and some people are going to be checking.
If you want my opinion, the reason it took him three days to come up with this LAME explanaton today in the Post it's because he thought Felt would die and couldn't refute a word he said so he spent 3 days "editing" the obituary and story he and Bradlee had written in anticipation of Felt's death.
Howlin, your thoughts on post #106 ???
Granted--the Post has improved since the 60's, marginally, whereas the Times has deteriorated more than marginally. It's still a liberal rag--and nowhere near the WSJ. As to Kerry, a story's a story. If Woodward's the great truthteller, how did he miss all the signs?
What was lame about the Woodward piece in your view?
I heard someone mention the possibility that G.Gordon Liddy might be 'Deep Throat', is this possible?
He was not writing about the campaign as far as I know. That was not his gig. As I said, I wish he had been.
Did you ever wonder why in all the stories they wrote and their book, Woodward and Bernstein never once trashed the CIA?
I think Ben Bradlee and Woodward ARE spooks.
I've never heard about the spies, but I thought all those guys were "retired" Cubans, am I wrong?
I agree with Liddy. Nixon was a good president. Our disagreement is on the definition of "hero." As for the narcissism and anti-semitism, listen to the tapes.
"I think Ben Bradlee and Woodward ARE spooks."
I'm lovin' this thread :)
I know that one is controversial, but is it now beyond per adventure that he was lying? Is that now accepted as part of the historical record?
The Space Shuttle wouldn't have blown up and the Red Sox would not have won the World Series.
For one thing, the burglars were EX CIA & FBI; one (McCord, former FBI) was working for the RNC, and Liddy (former FBI) was working for CRe-EP. The other two were ex CIA (Hunt & Bernard can't remember). They knew about covert activities and what to look for but weren't acting on behalf of either government organization.
The prostitution thing was something Liddy had suggested for the Democrat Convention in '72 in Miami. He'd wanted to lure Dems onto a boat full of ladies of the evening, then catch them. He got the idea from the Dems, but the break-in had nothing to do with prostitution (on either side).
So you like the house organ of the Democratic Party, do you? Hmmmmm........
