Thursday, June 2, 2005 1:37 p.m. EDT Nixon Horrified Jew Could Head FBI
Two months after the Watergate break-in, President Nixon already knew that FBI official W. Mark Felt was leaking information to reporters because Nixon had his own spy at the FBI, an Oval Office tape reveals.
The tape also discloses that Nixon was shocked to learn Felt was Jewish and became horrified that a Jew could become head of the FBI.(Vanity Fair described Felt, whose ancestors were Irish, as claiming "no religious affiliation.")
In the conversation between Nixon and Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman, taped on Oct. 19, 1972, Haldeman mentions Felt by name and refers to Nixons spy as "our source.
And when Haldeman discusses Felts ambition to head the FBI, Nixon says: "Christ, put a Jew in there?
Its not the only time Nixon was taped making an anti-Semitic remark.
On the tape of a February 1972 conversation with evangelist Billy Graham made public in February 2002 Nixon complained that a number of major news publications were "dominated by Jews, and Graham responded: "The stranglehold has got to be broken, or the countrys going to go down the drain.
Nixon said: "You believe that?
Graham: "Yes sir.
Nixon: "So do I. I cant ever say that, but I believe it.
Graham: "No, but if you get elected a second time, then we might be able to do something.
Later on the tape, after Graham left, Nixon told Haldeman: "The Jews are irreligious, atheistic, immoral bunch of bastards.
The tape citing Felt as a leak mentions FBI Director L. Patrick Gray, whom Nixon had appointed after J. Edgar Hoover died passing over Felt, who was expected to get the top job.
Here are excerpts from the tape:
Nixon: "Well, if theyve got a leak down at the FBI, why the hell cant Gray tell us what the hell is left . . . ?
Haldeman: "We know whats left, and we know who leaked it.
Nixon: "Somebody in the FBI?
Haldeman: "Yes, sir. Mark Felt. You cant say anything about this because it will screw up our source and theres a real concern. [Attorney General John] Mitchell is the only one who knows about this and he feels strongly that we better not do anything because . . .
Nixon: "Do anything? Never.
Haldeman: "If we move on him, hell go out and unload everything. He knows everything thats to be known in the FBI. He has access to absolutely everything . . .
Nixon: "You know what Id do with him, the bastard? Well thats all I want to hear about it.
Haldeman: "I think he wants to be in the top spot.
Nixon: "Thats a hell of a way for him to get to the top ... Is he Catholic?
Haldeman: "Jewish.
Nixon: "Christ, put a Jew in there?
Haldeman: "Well, that could explain it, too.
I have to wonder--who is Hillary Clinton's Felt? Who has been feeding her what they know, and who has "access to everything"???
Speaking of Nixon and Israel, a friend of mine flew the first 141 into Lod airport on the resupply mission that Nixon launched with teh simple words "If it flies, it goes."
It is long past time to stop bad mouthing Nixon for Watergate. The Watergate-ers were looking for what they thought were documents linking the Democrats with Soviets.
Only after the USSR broke up did we find out how many spies and collaborators there were in America. Too late for Nixon, though.
Good information Phil. I was not interested in politics at that time so a lot of the details are new to me.
As I always undestood it, Nixon wanted to "end the war with honor" including a full accounting of MIA/POWs. At least that's the "spin" I've heard. As far as winning, I think that was hopelessly shattered because the nation had lost all confidence in our ability to win thanks to the likes of Kerry, Fonda et. al.
The North Vietnamese were pretty much defeated after the Tet Offensive but were emboldened by many of our useful idiots back home. Thank you Walter Cronkite.
Once the war began, the Soviet Union, an ardent supporter of the Arab cause, quickly resupplied its client armies. Despite opposition within his Cabinet, President Nixon ordered a huge resupply airlift to Israel, which was running short of critical war materiel.
I might be wrong, but just now, on the Larry King rerun, the transcript seemed to say...
The question becomes... Was Nixon surprised at Felt's position within the FBI because Nixon thought Hoover was an anti-Semite?
It means Dick knew that Felt had photos of him behind the grassy knoll.
You are certainly right is saying Nixon helped Israel;
To Israel's shock, Sadat and his Syrian partners sent 70,000 Egyptian troops against the 500 (yes, only 500) Israelis at the Canal. In the north, the Syrians hurled 1,800 tanks at Israel's 180 tanks positioned on the Golan Heights.
President Nixon ordered a huge resupply airlift to Israel, which was running short of critical war materiel.
The tide of battle turned in Israel's favor.
I'm sure you understand that the Journal's Best of the Web Today was not endorsing the Iranian television slant on Watergate. Notice the quotation marks around "news story," indicating that is was just anti-Israel propaganda. Iran's mullahs were trying to twist Watergate into an anti-Jewish rant and blame Nixon's misdeeds on a Jewish conspiracy. Nonsense. Iranian TV has the credibility of Al Jazeera.
"Zionists" weren't out to get Nixon. Nixon was paranoid, didn't trust anyone, had few friends, and saw enemies everywhere he looked, including Jews and anyone who disagreed with him. A sad and pitiful man.
Christine Todd Witless is maximally emetic.
Howard Dean:
According to Vanity Fair, though, Felt wasn't Jewish, but of Irish ancestry and no religion. That's more likely, but there still may be at least one more mystery surrounding DT.
It would be funny if Nixon didn't make Felt head of the FBI because Haldeman thought he was Jewish, and he wasn't Jewish.
Felt was Catholic and Nixon thought he was Jewish because of his name no doubt, and Haldeman "confirmed" it, because well, he thought the name was Jewish too no doubt. Sad to think these guys were both sitting in the oval office.
It is not just the taboo. The sterotypes are less and less accurate, and less and less about matters that folks care about anymore, to the extent it still has any accuracy at all.
