Admittedly, I've not read the book and have no plans to do so. I read everything in the newspapers during the time, and that was quite enough. I've seen portion of the movie and knew right away that it was embellished.

I've read so much that I don't remember just where I read this, but according to what I did read, Haldeman and Nixon were mistaken in thinking that Felt was a Jew. Just what his religion was was not mentioned though.

Praise the Lord. I'm much relieved. I have thought about you all day. Even tracked you to learn the surgery was successful.

Mr. Felt is a Navy veteran and that service counts toward total Federal service. He had to do something between 1931 and 1942. I suspect that was Navy time. So now we may have a super grade GS-18 with over 40 years Federal service. I think the guy is pulling down over $10,000 per month. Even in California that should pay the bills unless someone has a very bad habit.

Fascinating! I'm scratching my head trying to recall the name of a flick which takes place near DC around the Watergate years. It's about the "transformation" of a conservative looking family into a mod one, to a beatnik, and so forth. And throughout the film are snips, news clips of the Watergate hearings, vietnam war. And, it involves the "growing" commune and pop culture in those very once "staid" locales.

In your post, it all got too expensive to rent to Junkies. Yep. I watched that happen in Marin County, too.

This is going to trigger alot of new reaearch and re-writing of old 'facts.'

My head is whirling from some of the info posted here today.

I've been talking to my kids lately about the 60's and 70's and the rise of the hippies, free love, antiwar stuff. What was the genesis?

This stuff seemed to blossom on the campuses, espcially the elite ones where rich kids were enrolled. I grew up in a poor, blue collar area. We were more interested in getting jobs than in wandering around in drug-induced free love stupors, but the underlying thinking still permeated our thinking by the 70's. There was a major paradigm shift among the youth, but where did it come from?

Reading some of this stuff today, I'm wondering if it wasn't part of the same stuff that was happening in Washington.

And I thought I was outgrowing conspiracy theories after my Clinton fatigue set in... ;-)

... and it wouldn't surprise me if much of the details are part true, and part not. And not necessarily due loss of memory. The man, Felt, had some honor at some point, no? And is he not of that WWII generation? Yes, he is. I hardly think he's going gut to the throat regarding "all" matters. No, you see, not only might this maintain a shred of dignity; but also leaves room for Bernstein and other "deepies" to tell their tales!

There was some guy on today (can't remember which show) who is the head of the whistle blowers "union" or whatever the heck it is.

He was on with Joseph DiGenova, whom I love, and they were arguing about whether what Felt did was right or wrong; Joe said he should have gone up to Capitol Hill and talked to any of the congress critters he spoke to IN SECRET on a daily basis and told them what was going on OR he should have resigned and held a press conference IF he was doing it for ehtical reasons.

The whistle blower guy said that if he had exposed himself as Deep Throat, he would have been "subject" to the same kinds of scrutiny that the Swift Boats guys were and it would have become about HIM rather than about Nixon.

Imagine that! Actually having to publicly back up his accusations. The guy acted like that was a bad thing.

Go figure.

In Northern California; most all homes with garages have ATTACHED garages. If the garage is separate, it is called a "detached" garage, and if converted, then called an "in-law" cottage. (No.CA RE lingo.) Six thousand a month? Oh yes, that's livable in Santa Rosa. With or Without Kids in College.

May be so..but the point was, if they thought he was Jewish, and that governed their actions..then..if makes no difference

She said they could use the money from a book to pay down debts, starting with all the debt she has that has gone to educate "HER" children. Since when do you use the Grandfathers money to educate your children. She came across as a money hungry b___h and he appears to have mental problems.

You hit the nail on the head by saying "to put our feelings about his story aside" and the fact that "Woodward and Bernstein have made a fortune off of this story for years."

Felt had an agreement with Woodward and Bernstein and they kept their part (I am addressing this narrow issue and not defending the story) and Felt should have released them and not sold the story.

I agree that questioning his care and living situation is not appropriate.

BTW, the daughter's lawyer is quoted as comparing his client to Amber Frey and said Frey fell into a story and is making money.

That is absurd. Frey played an active investigative role once she had suspicions about Peterson.

The one in this comparison who fell into a story is Joan by virtue of her father. She did nothing to contribute to the story and that comparison is so revealing of a level of arrogance and dismissal of the "little people".

Come on...we don't know how much $$ he gets, nor the level of care they provide..there could be a huge gulf between the two..

This is not appropriate questioning, IMO.

Here's another possibility: what if he was NOT Deep Throat, but that the daughter and Woodward have entered into a plot to deflect attention from the real one? We only have her word that he ever admitted it...that and a family attorney who promptly sold the story to Vanity Fair.

There are others who knew. Felt co-authored a book and the man was on Hardball tonight and said Felt revealed his role to him (after the book was published in which Felt lied about it---which is just fine with said co-author).

You know, I have often thought about those years. The "generation gap" permeated even small towns in the Midwest. Why was it that the normal tensions between teens and their parents got magnified into a national movement? How complicit was the media in fanning the flames of inter-generational war?

The anti-war movement was partially funded by the communists. That is a fact that came out years after the war. The tv networks, we now find out, were run by a bunch of leftists (and who would have thought it of dear old Uncle Walter?).

The movies of the time (The Graduate, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Bonnie and Clyde, MASH) celebrated anti-establishment actions and lawlessness. People like John Kerry got to testify in Congressional hearings.

I have come to believe it was a well-orchestrated plan to undermine our society. I suppose I will have to wrap myself in tinfoil, but I can't think of any other explanation, unless we all went crazy at once.

Yeah, because your response on recomputing his pension refers back to the initial post at #1, and that post discusses this daughter's "past".

I was responding to the first paragraph, i.e.,

I have a few questions...Do Federal pensions index with COLA? If so, what would he be getting now. Also, back then..did Fed employees pay into SocSec. Would he be also receiving Soc Security?

I didn't quite understand your scatalogical reply in any event.

You sound like a DC local.

I live in the DC area if that is what you mean.

The point was that your knowledge of the federal retirement system seemed very typical of folks living around the DC area. I would have used the same approach you did to computing his pension in fact.

Now, a "scatalogical" response? I didn't use a "scatalogical" response.
