Poll says Stabenow holds big lead over GOP rivals
6/2/2005, 12:59 a.m. ET
The Associated Press

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow held big leads over three declared Republican challengers and one possible rival in the 2006 election, according to a recent poll of likely Michigan voters.

The first-term senator held leads of 27 percent to 29 percent in the poll of 600 people conducted May 22-26 by Lansing-based EPIC/MRA. The results have a margin of sampling error of 4 percentage points either way.

Michigan Republican Chairman Saul Anuzis told The Detroit News that "it is very, very early" in the 2006 election cycle and the four Republicans have "no name ID" at this stage.

Stabenow held a 57 percent to 30 percent lead over the Rev. Keith Butler of Southfield, a former Detroit city councilman.

Stabenow led businesswoman Jane Abraham, wife of ex-U.S. Sen. Spencer Abraham, 59 percent to 30 percent. Stabenow unseated the husband in 2000.

Stabenow held leads of 57 percent to 28 percent over two others — the Rev. Jerry Zandstra, program director of a Grand Rapids religion-oriented think tank, and Troy industrial engineer Bart Baron.

Of the four, all but Abraham have said they will run, while Abraham said she has yet to decide.

Fifty-four percent of those polled gave Stabenow a positive job approval rating, while 33 percent gave her a negative rating.

By comparison, President Bush got a negative job rating from 55 percent in the Michigan poll and a positive rating from 44 percent, while Gov. Jennifer Granholm had a 52 percent positive and 47 percent negative rating, EPIC/MRA said.

This is still way early, and Spence Abraham had bigger leads against Stabmenow long after this point before he lost by 1%. EPIC's also a dem leaning poll. That said, Stab's beatable.

If a almost complete unknown like Bart Baron can hold Stabenow to 57% with no campaign whatsoever, that means there's a probably 43% anti-Stabenow vote right off the bat without any attacks on her poor record. How many know that she's been unable to pass one law in 10 years? Or vote to ban the .30-30? Vote to grant MFN status to China affecting our jobs? She's also gaining a reputation as a obstructionist. All we need to do is paint her as all talk and no action on health care, and she should get a one way ticket back to Ingham County.

Who are they polling?  I've never been polled, nor has anyone I know.

The same poll showed some vulnerability for Granholm. She is in big trouble with women under 40.

I would like a Michigander that votes FOR Stabenow in this poll, to name ONE thing that she has accomplished...

If she is a dem, which she is, NOT MUCH---except obstruction of everything that Bush has wanted done...

OH, and stick with Levin so that Levin's nepotism could pay off re: a judicial appointment...

Yep, they probably polled the workers at the Dem HQ in DeeTroit. Hate to say it but we haven't heard a peep about the whole Senate race at all "up north" here...I didn't even know there WERE challengers. Hopefully the Republicans will start tooting some horns and get the word out. Michigan is a little bigger place than just the SE corner.

Stabenow held a 57 percent to 30 percent lead over the Rev. Keith Butler of Southfield, a former Detroit city councilman.

At this point, those numbers impress me pretty much. Correct me if I'm wrong, but at this point Butler is not well known in the state, right?

You mean there are still 600 people in Detroit?  I use the term people very loosely.

Poll results are an attempt to shape the race early..scare out the competition..I'd wager that not 1 in 20 residents of Michigan could even tell you who Keith Butler is, let alone why they would vote for him.. You're correct, IMHO, it hat it really shows a very strong ABD..anyone but Debbi..sentiment.OTOH..why does the Michigan GP have such a weak bench..what happened to the rookie congresswoman, Candace somehting?..she's a comer in party circles, isn't she?

That's a damn weak list of GOP candidates. I'd like to see some polls of Stabenow vs. Mike Rogers or Candice Miller. I think any of the current GOP Congressmen could beat her like a drum. She stole the 2000 election from Spence Abraham and I would not count on that happening again. She is also dumb as a fence post and hasn't done a damn thing for Michigan in 5 years.

Uggghhhh!

I had the "pleasure" of meeting Stabenow at the local bakery during the last Clinton campaign..

She was there, stumping.

Another Mom in my daughter's class introduced me to her.

i asked Debbie how it felt to be working for an adulterer, a liar, and asked her if she knew about the Arkansas Tainted Blood Scandal?

Debbie gibbered at me, and the other Mom never spoke to me again.

One of the old farmer's at a nearby taable paid for my coffe and ddough-nut..

Fun morning!

Not that I'm paranoid or anything but knowing how honest the lefties are during elections(to use a well known shibboleth), wasn't something fishy about her initial election?

The one thing that sinks all Republicans in Michigan is the Detroit vote. Without Detroit Bush would have won Michigan by over 150,000 votes. Kieth Butler is a conservative black Preacher. He could possibly neutralize the Detroit vote.

I think Stabenow's beatable, but I sure won't hold my breath for any of that quartet beating her.

Fox News had a long piece about the Detroit Mayor a couple of weeks ago---pretty corrupt from the way it sounds, but he has the backing of the black clergy and so he gets away with it....

It also helps that his sister is in the US. House...

I wouldn't live in Detroit, the way the piece made the city sound...
