"...Ultimately the story died because of money. The Felt family and their attorney wanted a lot of money, and People magazine - with my blessing - backed away in what would have been a case of "checkbook journalism."

I guess their book was turned down by Judith Regan as well. Let's face it, the daughter wants millions ans will use her sick cowardly father to get it.
In the 1950s he would have been a walk-on on the tv-show "I've Got A Secret" and that would be IT.
Whatever else he did - he should have paid more attention to the raising of his daughter.
This has restored a modicum of respect to People.
fascinating reading. thanks for posting.
Naval intelligence indeed. Wasn't Johnathan Pollard the same?
Just what kind of an education, that she has yet to pay for, did she give these kids?
"That she's trying to horn in on what she perceives as a cash cow shows how thoughtless she is as to what this means to this country."
My liberal, Clinton-kneepad-wearing, mother-in-law has always been a good barometer for me to determine what the typical, naive, Washington Post-reading, MSNBC-watching Democrat is thinking. Unfortunately, the M-I-L is just as excited as the lottery-winning Felt daughter. She is beside herself and giddy at the realization that she got to find out who Deepthroat was before she dies. She has taken her phone off the hook and set up two TVs in one room with a remote in each hand so she can catch every talking head show she can find. She has been out to various newstands to get copies of the NYTimes, The LATimes, The Washington Post, you name it.
I can't be positive but I thought I heard her reviewing her plans to go down to her favorite newstand at Barnes & Noble with a couple of friends and some sleeping bags and pull an all-nighter so they can be first in line when the new Time Magazine comes out. You think I'm kidding?
I have no doubt MF is DT.
Wow. Thanks for the m-i-l barometer reading.
Ooh, boy
LOL
I have had so little time to freep this week but am interested to hear that you think MF is really DT.
I had long thought that DT was really a composite of many sources, and will look forward to other analysis about this matter; wish I could join in more!

When Clinton's accussors were in the forefront of the news the dominant media and the Clinton damage control machine went into hyperdrive to destroy and discredit anyone, ANYONE, who even sniffed a dollar for their story. Now look at these bastards. They are not worthy of licking Linda Tripps shoes. Sickening.
Very, very true. All Linda Tripp asked for was...well, nothing really. I suppose she didn't want to be fired from her GS job in government, but that wasn't a demand or anything. To fire her (as she ultimately was) amounted to vengeance and retaliation.
Methinks the media will drop this Deep Throat story like a hot potato after the Sunday Talk shows get through with it. There are too many embarrassing revelations coming to light about Woodward, the Washington Post, the ham fisted Felt family, and the media's use of anonymous sources.
The MSM has been trotting out Ben Bradley daily....almost hourly to shore up the canards which the Washington Post and Woodward have inculcated into the minds of the American public. The parallels which we mention (Tripp and Felt) are self-evident with the exception that Felt was under obligation of law to not divuldge 302 information...but he did. Tripp was under no such legal strictures. Felt was a law unto himself and the Media, which worships at the monacre of "A Nation of Laws, Not Men", have been feverishly trying to recast priorities now that they have been exposed as duplicitous shills by their own words. They are now in the process of accepting what they previously regarded as unacceptible. The American public needs to tell them to fish or cut bait. Make up their minds, but don't try to make up our minds.
Very true--I saw his boring mug on the tube again today.
Yes---the media's leaky boat has to be patched, and the MSM forms the wagons in a circle every time. They know a loss of credibility by one pillar puts them all at risk.
A perfect example of this was when Newsweak was under fire for its abdominal behavior. The White House press corps went ballistic on the President's spokesman for daring to point out the obvious. The NY Times chided the Bush Administration for having the gall to suggest a media outlet act with professionalism.
The latest orgy of stories alleging "abuse" of the Koran are payback for Newsweak getting caught with its pants around its ankles. Do you know what Muslims consider "desecration" of the Koran? Standing above the Koran, touching the Koran with the left hand, allowing the bottom sole of your foot to point in the direction of the Koran. I am not kidding.
For this, the media is willing to endanger American soldiers serving in hostile places, and US civilian citizens living abroad. All because the MSM needs to shift the focus away from its own shortcomings.
