Ben Stein -Deep Throat and Genocide

Re: The "news" that former FBI agent Mark Felt broke the law, broke his code of ethics, broke his oath and was the main source for Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward's articles that helped depose Richard Nixon, a few thoughts.

Can anyone even remember now what Nixon did that was so terrible? He ended the war in Vietnam, brought home the POW's, ended the war in the Mideast, opened relations with China, started the first nuclear weapons reduction treaty, saved Eretz Israel's life, started the Environmental Protection Administration. Does anyone remember what he did that was bad?

Oh, now I remember. He lied. He was a politician who lied. How remarkable. He lied to protect his subordinates who were covering up a ridiculous burglary that no one to this date has any clue about its purpose. He lied so he could stay in office and keep his agenda of peace going. That was his crime. He was a peacemaker and he wanted to make a world where there was a generation of peace. And he succeeded.

That is his legacy. He was a peacemaker. He was a lying, conniving, covering up peacemaker. He was not a lying, conniving drug addict like JFK, a lying, conniving war starter like LBJ, a lying, conniving seducer like Clinton -- a lying, conniving peacemaker. That is Nixon's kharma.

When his enemies brought him down, and they had been laying for him since he proved that Alger Hiss was a traitor, since Alger Hiss was their fair-haired boy, this is what they bought for themselves in the Kharma Supermarket that is life:

1.) The defeat of the South Vietnamese government with decades of death and hardship for the people of Vietnam.

2.) The assumption of power in Cambodia by the bloodiest government of all time, the Khmer Rouge, who killed a third of their own people, often by making children beat their own parents to death. No one doubts RN would never have let this happen.

So, this is the great boast of the enemies of Richard Nixon, including Mark Felt: they made the conditions necessary for the Cambodian genocide. If there is such a thing as kharma, if there is such a thing as justice in this life of the next, Mark Felt has bought himself the worst future of any man on this earth. And Bob Woodward is right behind him, with Ben Bradlee bringing up the rear. Out of their smug arrogance and contempt, they hatched the worst nightmare imaginable: genocide. I hope they are happy now -- because their future looks pretty bleak to me.

Stein gives Nixon too much credit. He was no statesman, but a Machiavellian. The liberals hated him, but he was not an effective opponent of the liberals, nor did he try to be. Almost all serious conservatives at the time -- at least, before Watergate -- had a low opinion of the man and of the president.

Interesting post. The disgrace of Nixon is that he would not fight leftist ideas with conservative ideas, but rather resorted to fraud and force.... he was too lazy to educate the American people and/or spend political capital. Resorting to illegal means to fight the left made the crime of Watergate the cause celebre of the left for a generation.

I am perfectly aware that Nixon knew nothing of the break-in prior to the break-in, but he was the captain of the ship.

Ah, I see, said the blind man.

I persoanally never understood why the Libs hated the guy (with the Hiss exception, of course). He gave them more than they dreamed.

Whenever people ask me what good Nixon ever did, I tell them he made us all forget how much we hated LBJ.

McCain ... wasn't he P.O.W. during Jane Fonda's treasonous activity with N. Vietnam? I don't believe he has as much integrity as Nixon ... and I don't attribute too much to Tricky Dick. Sad really, what with all the accomplishments of Nixon's terms and the left has succeeded in stamping only Watergate as his legacy, conveniently ignoring the degeneracy of clinton, Kennedy (the entire family, actually), Johnson, and FDR.

A very interesting point you make! Nixon unwilling to educate the American people, instead engaging in skulduggery. You may well be right.

Explanation for Left's Nixon-hatred:

1) The Hiss case was a very big deal to them. And indeed, it was a big deal.

2) Nixon could be a street fighter when he wanted to be. This does not apply to ANY other modern GOP president -- Ike, Ford, Reagan, GHWB, and needless to say, GWB.

3) RN re-elected by a landslide against McGoo, the pure left-liberal.

4) RN fought the Vietnam war, with some success.

5) RN represented the "square," Middle-American silent majority. He didn't do much for them, but he was one of them, and many of them identified with him. There is a parallel here to GWB.

6) RN hated the left and knew what SOBs they were. He understood them better than any GOP president with the possible exception of RR.

7) RN was smart -- smarter than any modern GOP president.
The left always hates that in an opponent.

It is so good to have you post again.
This Nixon thing revived brings up a bad memory of what the press was doing in that time.
We had no Fox,no Rush and no FR among the many outlets we have now. There was a sinking feeling always in the pit of my stomach that I now feel just rereading about it.
Our country has gone through some bad times where we came close to loosing our freedom. Praise God we are still holding fast. We must never let the left steal our Gov.

Personally, I like the Mo Dean's a whore theory to explain the break-in. It might not be true, but like liberals say, it ought to be.

China may be communist but is a loyal economic ally

China may be evil, but they were trying to help us destroy the wicked Viet Cong once and for all.

That said, his argument in this piece is absurd. We were losing in Vietnam before Watergate, and keeping Nixon in office would not have changed that, nor could Nixon have stopped the Khmer Rouge.

We were losing in Vietnam? How do you figure that?

The United States most certainly did not lose the Vietnam war on the battlefield. U.S. armed forces won every battle of consequence, including the notorious Tet Offensive.

The war was lost in Washington D.C., when the Democrats abandoned South Vitenam.
