With "friends" like that 9 year old, she didn't need any enemies.

"Kenny, that is it! If you don't put it down right this very second, I am going to come over and spank you!!!" My first wife's father was a child psychiatrist. His favorite saying was, "Never strike a child except in anger." He insisted that you had to hit the kid while he was still engaged in the behavior, or he wouldn't connect it with getting whacked. He thought, "Wait 'til your father comes home" was the worst possible thing. By the time the spanking comes, the kid doesn't connect it with what he did.

"I bet that if you asked, he would say Kenny had poor impulse control."
No, I would say that Kenny suffered from PPS (poor parenting syndrome). Failure to obey a parent is not poor impulse control. Impulse control is when you get the sudden urge to beat the living c**p out of someone who is irritating you, but you don't do it. People with poor impulse control act on their sudden violent impulses.

My six year old girl smart mouthed me in angry tone the other day and I smacked her little bottom faster than you can imagine. About 5 minutes later she humbly came to me and apologized. She is very strong willed but strong willed children often become very successful leaders. I'll let you know which way she turns out in twenty years.

"or the kid?"
?
The kid...who else killed a playmate?
To: Nick Danger
Based on personal experience - yes and no. If the punishment waits, the kid will rationalize his actions, making himself the tragic hero of sorta psycho-drama.
But if daddy does his job right he can snap the brat right out it, too.
At least it worked on me!

I sent it to him.
This really scares me. My older daughter is the type that everyone loves because she is so happy. Nothing gets her down. My little one is quiet and sensitive. She is very sweet, however she is really hush-hush when hurt.
I want this child no where around my girls.

In a couple of years you'll be able to ask her cell-mate that question.

Good luck, mom, and follow your instincts. I'm sorry this child already seems screwed up, but there's not much you can do about it, and you have to protect your own.
To: Nick Danger
My dad did some psychological terror that worked with that theory.
He would tell us, "On Saturday at 12:00, would are going to get a spanking."
You then had all week to think about it. Around 11:00 on Saturday, you were hysterical. Daddy would walk in at noon, snapping a belt.
"Did you learn a lesson?" he would ask as he snapped.
"OH YES!" you would cry.
"Okay" he would say as he walked out of the room.
I will tell you, I was never hit. It really worked.
Daddy, RIP!

Sending it to him is the best you can do, besides what you are already doing by protecting your girls.
Keep it up, over time he will get it.

My first wife's father was a child psychiatrist. His favorite saying was, "Never strike a child except in anger."
As a horseman, I know that striking a horse is about the 2nd worse thing you can do to them.
The worst thing you can do is NOT strike them when they need it. Like you said, its all about timing. When a horse nips me, I have 5 seconds to pound the crap out of it. Then, I walk away, give it a few seconds, and then walk over and pet it.
As for kids, the scenario would have been... "Kenny, put that down", Kenny ignores me but detects a slight sound, as he turns his head, he sees me approaching and puts it down.
To: MissEdie
How sad for this child to have that kind of future ahead of her. May God intervene and save her from herself.
