Absolutely not. If anything, he should be tried for treason.

Why did the Watergate break-in take place? Hasn't G. Gordon said it was to recover info to protect John Dean's current wife?

Yes, it's a theory propounded in the book Silent Coup by Len Kolodny (a self-proclaimed liberal Democrat, BTW.) Mo Dean was apparently tied in to a call-girl ring that the FBI had tied to the DNC. The madam of the call-girl ring worked at the DNC and was Maureen Dean's roommate 9before she moved in with John.) She was also one of Mo Dean's bridesmaids. (See the wedding picture in Mrs. Dean's book.)

Dean had to get Maureen's picture out of the madam's files in the DNC.

Why did Nixon feel he had to cover it up?

Dean worked for the Nixon Administration and the involvement of his paramour in a DNC-tied call-girl ring would have been used by the liberal media to harm him.

But why did Alexander Butterworth have to tell the committee about the tapes, and why didn't Nixon burn them, tehn challenge the committee to come over and find them?

Does anyone think the timing of this announcement has anything to do with David Eisenhower possible running against Hillary?

It's the other son-in-law, Ed Cox. David Eisenhower might have a better chance.

I just realized I posted the wrong son-in-law. I agree with you, however.

Former FBI Assistant Director W. Mark Felt has revealed he is the man known as Deep Throat.

This is not a scientific survey.

Nixon was *the* tragic figure of the 20th century.

And yet, and yet...twenty years after the resignation, when Newt's revolutionaries had taken over, and clinton had become irrelevant, where was President Nixon? The Statesman himself was in Moscow, tying up loose ends, saying goodbye to the old cold warriors he had helped to defeat.

> Have a pic of him hanging in my office.

I'm impressed.

Cool - I hope FReepers keep passing this thread along with the link. Getting ever closer to that 'more than 40% say not a hero' mark!

Worth repeating...

"And John Dean, whose operation it was, is a liberal hero, just like the Klintoons who illegally obtained almost 1,000 FBI files. Yet Chuck Colson looked at ONE and he had to be put in jail.

Liberal consistency! "

The first part I had heard from G. Gordon. I wish I had seen him this AM on F&F.

I have always wondered why Nixon did not destroy the tapes. I wondered that at the time.

Hmmm...wonder what his treatment at the hands of All the President's Men would have been had he gone at Nixon openly... A man's got to survive--literally or figuratively-- to tell the tale.

Hmmmm.... If the Nixon administration would have had someone whacked, it would have been Jack Anderson.

And welcome to FRee Republic ...............................troll.

President Nixon ended the war in Viet Nam by surrendering our effort there. The consequences are a matter of history. He did so because he was unable to overcome the anti war, anti Nixon, anti republican forces that were counter to his efforts within the country and within his own administration in the form of the likes of Felt.

If he was privy to knowledge of a criminal offense his obligation was to report it. He didn't therefore HE broke the law. Probably a registered Democrat.

Hero my a__.

I dunno - I am not fond of Richard Nixon, and he did engage in criminal behavior, so I'm OK with his resignation. However, I feel that Felt basically responded in kind... sneaky, underhanded, potentially criminal behavior to play "gotcha" with Nixon.

Felt was a disgruntled employee who got passed over for a job. He then betrayed the POTUS because he could.

The liberal media then portrayed Nixon as the biggest criminal of the century.

Nixon had some flaws but overall he was one of the most effective presidents of that century, I'd say top 5 in my opinion. Now that we know who this snake is we can start to give Nixon his proper place in history.
