Robbie Gordon of NASCAR Will Not Drive IRL Races Against Danica Patrick, Citing Weight Advantage
National Review Magazine: The Corner ^ | 6/1/05 | KJ Lopez

Posted on 06/01/2005 8:14:34 AM PDT by gopwinsin04

Robbie Gordon of NASCAR started the discussion, saying that he wouldn't drive in the Indy Car Racing League series until they do something about Danica Patrick's weight 'advantage.'

'The lighter the car, the faster it goes,' Gordon said. 'Do the math. Put her in the car at her weight, then put me or Tony Stewart in the car at 200 pounds and our cars are at least 100 pounds heavier.'

'I wont race against her until the IRL does something to take that advantage away.'

I glanced at the weight of the weight of the drivers in the Indy Car Series. They are pretty much smallish guys --between 140 and 155 lbs.

He seems to be willing to race against guys who are about 60 pounds less and had no problem with it before.

Last year I was sent on an errand to get Mario's autograph for a friend. UGH! It was not a pleasant experience.

I found him at the Memorabilia meet.

First of all it cost me $25.00 and then he ended up snapping at me because I asked him to autograph something that I hadn't bought from his booth of goods. I ended up telling him "hey, I am not even your fan- so just sign the stupid book- ok..."

They are not cool to the whole Indy scene that is why the glory escaped them both. ;]

Sounds like this guy is afraid of getting his butt kicked by a girl so he goes making excuses.

Suck it up Robbie!

Well this is sort of off topic- but since I am just hanging out here today anyway- I guess I will make the point. What your opinion of bad behavior is and what other people's opinion of bad behavior is may be two different things. Why not make your point and then let God sort it out.

You will never be able to control anyone other than yourself, and trying to bash people with the weight of God's judgment because you disagree with them is morally wrong.

You can not speak for God.

Your interruption of God is just about as good as anyone else's. Go ahead and make your point that is fine- but don't claim that you speak for God.

IMO- he is more interested in deeds than words anyway.

Seems to me she finished ahead of a hell of a lot of guys, including some who were perhaps less than 30 pounds heavier than she, a negligible difference. She is a kickass DRIVER. She likely has superior peripheral vision, reflexes and can make decisions in a millisecond at high speed. If they want to make a rule adjustment, then fine, but I still think she would have finished in the top ten.

I have no problem with your opinion. We all have them. I wasn't directing my statement to you anyway- so my post is not about your opinion.

About ten years ago I went to the Long Beach Grand Prix, and Mario was there in the memorabilia trailer and glared at me like I was a street bum when I asked him to autograph a race program. LOL Somehow I think he sensed I wasn't a fan.

It's unfortuante they have internet access at this camp. They could run into all kinds of degenerates online.

I never claimed that I spoke for God. I said many times, "I think", meaning my opinion. I would never be so bold to think I speak for God.

Bad behavior used to be easily defined, but we have grayed the lines so much that people actually think it is okay to pose like that for pictures.

Like I said many times today, I will let those who defend these pictures do so with God one day.

"The only thing I was saying was that I have a problem with the rule, not any particular driver," Gordon said Tuesday. "I've been impressed with Danica from the first time she got in an IRL car earlier this year, and I certainly did not mean to disrespect her or any other driver."

"Indy is one of the toughest races in the world to finish, let alone win, and the fact that she ran up front for most of the 200 laps proved her ability to drive," he said. "Given that she is so young, I would be amazed if she didn't win at least one Indy 500.

"Had she won, it would have done more for the IRL and the Indy 500 than could ever be imagined. As one who loves that race as much or more than any other, it would have been great to see because it would have been huge for the IRL."

More of Robby's comments from an AP article.

Well, I have a couple of daughters, and that colors my opinion on this issue. I'd like to think they can grow up in a country where their success doesn't lead to the expectation that they'll automatically shake their ass for the general public. Because the more women who do that, the more it will be expected, even insisted upon. And those aren't values I associate with the USA, but some medieval Arab potentate.

I don't know the rules for the Indy Racing League, so I can't answer specifically about their rules. I've seen a lot of races, and I've participated in a lot as a driver, crewman or official. And most race sanctioning organizations weigh the car and driver together after the race, or weigh the driver and add the driver's weight to the weight of the car for the post race tech inspection and weighing.

The advantage isn't so much that Danica's car is lighter. But there is an advantage for the designers and engineers. They can locate the ballast weight to their advantage to bring the car (with driver) up to the minimum weight specified by the rules. So Danica's car will potentially have a slightly lower center of gravity and will be gentler on the tires than say Robby Gordon's car.

Not for you. I've seen you attack a rape victim because of the clothes she wore.

I will let those who defend these pictures do so with God one day.

How kind of you! Just let God know it's okay with you!

Love the graphic!

It occurs to me that Danica may be a model as well as a racer which would explain the shots. She did say in the promo that that was a seperate part of her life than racing.

You can see more skin at the beaches and sometimes on regualr tv even. Look at the soaps and evening programming.

It's not so much the amount of skin shown, but the poses that some people are objecting to.

I think its possible that the rules may get changed for next year, but if they do, I think that will make people flock to the track even more. She is an excellent driver with a great career ahead of her. I think even if they change the weight rule, that she will still beat Robbie's butt and most of the other guys, she stands a good chance of winning.

Some people don't seem to get it. You can either drive or you can't. Some peole just have a natural talent for it. They go for it. They don't know what braking on the corners is, which is why they clock higher speeds.
