U.S. Border Patrol agents say they are the victims of escalating violence. The problem is getting so bad, the Border Patrol says numbers of assaults against them are up almost 50% from where they were last year. Agents in the Tucson sector are patrolling a total of 261 miles of border, but some are doing it from the confines of a cage. The vehicles are called 'war wagons', literally designed to protect against rocks and boulders thrown by illegal smugglers. But the metal caging won't protect agents from a problem that's gaining even more momentum. "When our agents try to do a vehicle stop, criminal element try to run over our agent to evade arrest," says agent Jose Garza, from the Tucson sector. So far this fiscal year, the Tucson sector of the Border Patrol has reported 163 acts of assault against agents, compared to a total of 118 for the entire fiscal year of 2004. National reports say vehicle rammings are up 188%, shootings are up 122% and cases of rock throwing are up 23%. Garza says, "They're getting frustrated because we're out there. We're encountering them more times." Agent Garza says he knows, with more manpower and resources, will come more encounters with criminal activity. There are no reports at this time of deaths or serious injuries to agents. Garza says those on patrol are constantly being trained about the dangers along the international line.
More hospitals should do this.
Like most Federal and local officials they seem to have misplaced them - along with their backbones, guts and hearts.
This is the outcome of "career politicians".
Never rock the boat, no matter what the justification.
Only the pension and perks at the end count.
Kerry would probably provide them with carfare.
Non sequitur. The bases being closed are not actively engaged in or necessary for defense of the southern border. And the bases on the border are not actively engaged in a defense of the border.
Good lord. ERs do NOT TURN THEM AWAY. I have first hand knowledge of this. The ER here issues frigging Psuedophedrine cause people come in with runny noses.
You are correct. I have lately turned on this subject. I used to feel the military had no business doing border patrol, but as I saw the problem more and more I think it should be. Give them BP training and let em go.
Do you see the problem with this? How about a child with a broken arm? A child with a bad burn?
To keep from "insulting our neighbors" we are destroying access to emergency services to the legal citizens of this country who paid for the hospital.
Illegal immigrants have a NET NEGATIVE economic impact on this country. They may work for $5 less an hour than a legal american citizen, but is that worth the cost of educating their children and the cost of providing their whole family health care? How about the cost of incarceration?
No other country allows unlimited immigration and with good reason. By your logic, borders really don't exist.
When Bush won his first term, my friend said that he hoped Bush would not disappoint him. I'll say to you what I said to him. "Lift your faith higher than Bush. In this world everyone will disapoint you. Your spouse, your kids, friends, your dad and yes sometimes your very own mother. But God will never disapoint you. Do what you can in your own space to help our country keep some sanity. The rest is , well.....all these things have to happen so scripture can be fulfilled".
If you know where the Army trains its military intelligence soldiers (as well as a few Marines, sailors, and airmen), you know which base should be number one for BP duty.
Then what do you when an American citizen shows up at the emergency room with 2nd degree burns? Tell them to wait until morning and get an appointment with their pediatrician?
The military is now training on the US border in conjunction with JTF-North. They used to be JTF-Six, based out of El Paso and Ft. Bliss.
The training is done by individual units, both active and reserve, I don't know the mechanics of who gets invited to 'come on down' or how they are identified.
The last unit to train was a Hunter-equipped UAV company from Savannah, GA. If you think about it, the concept is an exact match - the purpose of UAVs in SW and Central Asia is to look for and find small groups of people moving through or hiding out in vast uninhabited areas, or in small villages/towns. That's also what a UAV unit would be looking for along the US/Mexico border.
Neat, huh?
I tell you what pokie, lets see a hospital deny treatment to anyone for any reason. THe lawsuits filed by the ACLU and the other liberal wackoes would come so fast that the hospital attorneys wouldnt be able to keep up with them all.
I am sure the people from Oklahoma enjoy your disparaging remarks as well. Having lived there I can assure you most of them scale well above you based on your recent posts here.
I'm sorry, I have had it with GWB this term. He has utterly been out to lunch on almost every issue and things seem to be rapidly going in the wrong direction.
After 9/11 I figured common sense would prevail. I did have faith in him, however, many actions he has taken as of late make me question him, seriously.
