Nixon was a good man and President who inherited the mess of kennedy&johnson Viet Nam)If Nixon would have contested the results of the election as to voter fraud in Johnson's state and Daly's little chicago area kennedy would not have been elected to the office of POTUS. The bottom line, Nixon had more integrity/leadership than kennedy or johnson would ever possess in life. Aye. So Felt is Deep Throat...meaning that Woodward and Bernstein *lied* about Deep Throat being a chain smoking (he doesn't smoke), scotch drinking (he drinks martinis), White House source..

Obviously Woodward had plenty of reason to disguise a Felt-type Deep Throat—if the FBI source for the Post's Watergate investigation were revealed, it could look like the FBI was using the Post and it also would detract from the picture of two young reporters out knocking on doors to find out all by themselves who was behind Watergate.

I fell for nothing. Woodward and Bernstein simply lied. They lied about Deep Throat being a chain smoker. They lied about DT drinking scotch. They lied when they claimed that DT was powerless to arrest anyone. They lied when they said that DT had no ulterior motive such as revenge (Felt was passed over for promotion to the top FBI post by President Nixon). They lied when they said that DT was a White House insider.

I didn't make up those lies; Woodward and Bernstein made them up. They are liars. Hearing a lie doesn't mean that you've fallen for something, either.

I know that these points have been made probably a dozen times by the astute members of freerepublic, but these thoughts have been germinating in my head all day, and if I don't get them out, I may explode:

1. The same people who are calling Felt a hero, were excoriating Ken Starr for leaking information about an ongoing investigation to the press. It was never proven about Starr. Felt just admitted it.

2. Okay, so they got Nixon for corruption and criminal activity. I've got no great love for Nixon. But, isn't Felt's action a crime on the same par as Nixon's? What? The ends justify the means?

3. I've been hearing how this vindicates Woodward and Bernstein. To me, this makes them look like a couple of putzes. Investigative journalists? Having the FBI do the investigation and having it leaked to you is not exactly the kind of get-down-in-the-muck-and-drag-the-story-out that W & B would have had you believe that it was. Hell, I would be embarrassed to call myself an investigative journalist if I just was regurgitating an official police investigation.

Well I am glad you know the whole truth.

As for me, there are too many questions about how the #2 at the FBI could have possibly known what was going in Nixon's inner circle. While the FBI knew about the situation after the fact, they did not know what was on the tapes until the tapes were transcribed and released (i.e. the famous Rosemary Woods tape deletion incident...).

The fact that Woodward was a former Navy officer and that he had previously been linked to Haig is apparently an inconvenient fact that should just be ignored. I got it now, ignore the inconvenient, accept the non-plausible.

While it may be possible that Haig used Felt as a conduit (i.e. Haig confirming Felt as "Deep Throat") the information was too far removed to be originally from Felt.

At this point, I really could not care less if Haig is outed or not, but to accept the "truth" coming from Felt after decades just smells like another red herring.
