I read that she claims it was planted, but even if it wasnt this sentence is absurd imo.
"The Indonesian Government yesterday backed the prosecution bid to toughen Corby's 20-year jail sentence for smuggling 4.1 kilograms of marijuana into Bali's airport last October."
How much is that in our measurement?
Usually I am suspicious of claims that the drugs were planted, but her claim along with the fact that there is no evidence of drug use in her past is rather convincing.
It may seem absurd, but if you dont respect the laws of another country, and you break them, and get caught committing a crime. Too bad.
Maybe if we had prisons as nasty and tough sentences like this, criminals might think a little ahrder in the US.
I wonder whether some corrupt officials are capable of having illegal things planted on innocent people to rally the wealthy of the world to funnel huge sums of money in bribes in order to get the person released. - Just think how doubly horrible this would be (and horrible it is anyway) if a person were innocent of the accusation.
Sounds good to me. 20 years for a couple of kilos, might be a little light sentence, although the prison sounds fairly tough. I would like to see US drug smugglers get at least that much considering how nice our prisons are.
This is Indonesian payback for the Austrailians. Aussies are not well liked there, since Aussie troops kicked the
Indonesian militias out of East Timor after the independence vote in 2000. After the Bali bombing, Aussies should just stay away from that country. The Philippines would be a safer choice.
I actually think it was planted. It was a large amount, she's a beautician, she's running over to Bali for a quick holiday, and it shows up easily found in her bag?
This was a long thread by the time I got here, so if I'm repeating someone else I apologize in advance.
Apparently, her claim that the drugs were planted is bolstered by the fact that it is a known tactic of drug traffickers in Bali to plant drugs in someone else's luggage.
Also, the Bali bombers were sentenced to two and one half years for murdering people. Of course, they were Muslims acting according to her faith.
I agree it is absurd considering one of indonesia's own citizens bombed a building there killing many many people and he ONLY got a two year sentence. I think it's a politcal shot from Indonesia to Australia. Is there an epidemic of Aussie's smuggling dope to and from indonesia?
Well, in a general way I would call it absurd, but that is typical of justice in countries with a muslim majority. OTOH, if she did what she is accused of, and this sentence is comparable to what a native Malaysian would get for the same crime, then I have little sympathy for her.
Even so, she voluntarily went to that place.
I would avoid going to any part of the third world unless absolutely necessary. I certainly would never go for fun.
My God, it's absolutely INSANE!!!!
