Religa, Kaczynski Even in Poland’s Electoral Race

(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Two candidates are tied in the early stages of the campaign to choose Poland’s new president, according to a poll by GFK published in Rzeczpospolita. 23 per cent of respondents would vote for current senator Zbigniew Religa, while 23 per cent would support Warsaw mayor Lech Kaczynski.

Religa—a cardiologist—was first elected to the Senate in 1993, earning new terms in 1997 and 2001. Last year, Religa founded the Centre (C) party. Kaczynski is a member of the Law and Justice Party (PiS) and has served as the capital’s head of government since 2002.

Self-Defence of the Polish Republic (SRP) leader Andrzej Lepper is third with 16 per cent, followed by Civic Platform (PO) leader Donald Tusk with 15 per cent, and Marek Borowski of the Social Democracy of Poland (SDP) with 13 per cent. Former prime minister Waldemar Pawlak of the Peasant’s Party (PSL), Adam Gierek of the Democratic Left Alliance-Labour Union (SLD-UP), Maciej Giertych of the League of Polish Families (LPR) and Wladyslaw Frasyniuk of the Democratic Party (PD) are in single digits.

SLD member Aleksander Kwasniewski has been Poland’s head of state since 1995. The election is scheduled for Oct. 9. If no candidate garners more than 50 per cent of all cast ballots, a run-off would take place on Oct. 23.

In a prospective second round, Kaczynski holds a two per cent lead over Religa. Either of the two main contenders would defeat Lepper and Tusk in a run-off.

I'm going to say that the guy on the left (Kaczynski) is more conservative and, therefore, the person to support.

vs.

I think I'm right because this guy was against gay parades in Warsaw (was in the news recently). He's the mayor of Warsaw and if he was a liberal, I doubt he would have supported the gay parade. Not 100 percent sure, though.

Either Kaczynski or Tusk.

I have not decided yet which one I'm going to vote for.

Kaczynski is certainly more conservative - as far as society, history, tradition, religion and things like that are concerned.

But he's far to leftish when talking about economy.

Yeah, and now send a ping to jb6, as P&S is his "favourite" Polish political party. :-)
Especially after their stance considering Russia and Putin.

I agree, that's why I may vote for him.

But if I do - I'll certainly vote for PO, not for P&S.
Kind of my own, private "check & balance".

Kaczynskiemu odbija ostatnio, duma go pociagnela .
