Today is the anniversary of one of the great achievements of the 20th Century. Sir Edmund Hillary conquered Mt. Everest on May 29, 1953.
One of the darkest days of the 20th Century occured in Park Ridge, Illinois on October 26, 1947. Hugh and Dorothy Rodham became parents of a bad seed named Hillary Diane Rodham. At the time, Sir Hillary was a beekeeper in New Zealand.
(from Snopes)
During a stop in Nepal while on a south Asian goodwill tour in April 1995, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton engaged in a brief (and reportedly coincidental) meeting with Sir Edmund Hillary (who, along with Tenzing Norgay, became the first person to reach the summit of the world's highest mountain, Mt. Everest, in 1953) and told reporters she had been named after the famed mountain climber. The notion that Ms. Clinton's given name was inspired by the man who conquered Everest was almost certainly a bit of fiction invented for political expediency (as many critics have noted, Edmund Hillary didn't become world-famous until six years after Hillary Rodham was born).....
I guess we are all shocked to discover that Hillary Diane Rodham turned into one of the great liars ever, aren't we? There is nothing about which she will not lie. And there are no lives she won't destroy to get back to the White House. What are you going to do about it?
1921 Dalai Lama allows British reconnaissance party to visit Tibet and the northern side of Mt. Everest.
1924 British explorers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine disappear near the summit, along the Northeast Ridge. It is possible that they may have actually been the first to reach the summit, but they never returned.
1949 Nepal opens its borders, making access to the mountain's southern peak possible.
1953 Hillary and Norgay reach summit.
1963 First Americans reach the summit.
1989 First two women, both American, reach the summit.
1990 Sir Edmund Hillary's son, Peter, reaches summit.
1996 Eleven people die during spring expeditions.
I thought I read some place that she was NOT named Hillary upon birth...she changed her name to Hillary?
She was Hillary at birth.
