Totally agree with your #244 take on Wallace/Dodd: fishing expedition, political games... Dodd didn't look too good in that interview.

OTOH later in the show Cristal said that Reid got rolled by the radical left of the party, specifically Dodd, Kennedy, and Schumer. He said there was NO way Reid wanted Bolton to go down last week right after this "agreement" because this was hurting "moderate" Rats for whom Reid was looking out.

Cristal stated straight out that the radicals Dodd, Kennedy and Schumer have taken over the control of the Rat party. It sounded a lot to me like what many conservatives think happened to Frist at the hands of the belly crawling appeasers McCain, Graham, Warner, etc.

Juan immediately disagreed saying that no way Reid was rolled, but Britt said, "Reid was rolled." Then the subject was changed.

It's hard for me to regard Reid as any kind of moderate even though he tries to play one for his home audience. If the far left, extreme radical Rats have indeed taken over the party from such "moderates" as Reid, IMO the destruction of that party is imminent. I hope.

The United States of Europe has been in the works for some time. A friend of mine used it as part of his doctoral thesis a number of years ago. France is adamant in trying to wrest power from the USA being as strong as we are today. France cannot afford to do it alone and is trying to get taxes from other European countries so they can compete. They want a satellite system comparable to the ones we have, and they want some form of military contingent to compete with our ability to respond anywhere in the world. None of this is possible for France alone and they hate the fact of their being a second rate world power now.

What is really amazing is the French believe destroying each countries sovereignty is a worthy means of accomplishing these goals. Belgium has gone along with it but it appears citizens of France are not so sure today.

Somehow I don't think the "United States of Europe" would be as concerned about its member states than the USA has...

Especially when you go back to the ramp up to this war in Iraq....France and Russia and Germany have WAY too many financial and otherwise, ties to the old Saddam regime, and the OFF Scandal is probably just a part of it...I am sure that weaponry his also involved...

Snugs, this MAY be a way, if it passes, that the EU will help your country "stay closed to their enemies", and that may be, other than trade, the only reason to accept it..

I agree that the time he spent as a POW has affected him he was so quick to deny that on Hannity and Colmes the other evening much too quick IMHO. Commonsense tells one it must have and to deny it is both stupid and irresponsible and disrespectful to yourself and your colleagues.

The fear the EU countries have was apparent when they wanted to raise taxes in Ireland because Ireland was too successful using lower taxes to stimulate her economy.

Yes this is what amazes me about France but if you think back to the early days of the EU (ECC) they benefited immensely due to CAP (common agricultural policy) because of how their farms are constructed whereas it nearly crippled the British Farmer. While that was happening the man in the street in France was quite happy to go ahead with everything else involved but now it is not so lucrative to them with poorer countries coming in and they are having to foot some of the bill they are now shouting. France in a way will always go with what benefits her financially lets remember world war II most of French co-operated with the Germans who they viewed as the winning team.

Thankfully Russia are not in the EU think of that financial burden but we do have countries such as Estonia that are which as much as one wants to help them at what cost to our economy do we?

Germany thought the wall coming down would give them more power and more prosperity but they badly miscalculated and it has economically weakened Germany to the extent that there are many west Germans who regret the wall coming down and the reunification of Germany.

I can't remember who said it, but back in the thirties someone said that if Socialism could work anywhere, it would be Germany because the Germans had such a strong work ethic and discipline.

It seems to me that 2 or 3 generations under Communism is enough to breed away any trace of work ethic or discipline. Of course, West Germany went pretty damn socialist too and is weaker for it, but not quite as ruined as where full communism was entrenched.

Agreed. As much as we here on FR carp over Republican problems, the Democrats are worse off. The far left special interest groups are controlling the Democrat party and they cannot figure a way to get away from it since they get so much money from them.

The biggest problem with East Germany was that no investment had been made with the factories in the East and they were in such a terrible state companies who wanted their old factories back did not realise until they had them what a mess they had.

To bring them up to modern standards would have too much for too little return hence many were closed and then people were out of work and into the welfare system hence more drain on Germany.

In addition to that jobs that were available were low paid ones which some of the east Germans would probably have taken but were already taken by immigrant turks so all in all a total economic mess in what had previously been one of the strongest economies certainly in Europe if not worldwide.

Russia is a financial burden now but one her oil pipeline starts producing, Russia will have more money than the EU realizes.

I was just thinking about Ireland. I've not heard anything about how they feel about the EU - my guess is they aren't too happy about signing on, since their economy has been so much better than many in Europe. Do either of you have any information about which direction the Irish want to go?

Remember during and after the last election, Moveon.org and the other George Soros financed groups TOLD the dem party that they bought and paid for them, and they will be calling the shots....

The biggest problem is one of political philosophies. Refusing to either eliminate or reduce the welfare state is the main problem with the EU. Someone has to pay for it and continued excessive socialism is killing growth and productivity. Many people in the EU damn capitalism, a market economy and the US, but it's exactly these things that help keep America out producing what the EU is capable of doing. It's like a yo-yo. The EU sanctions more capitalistic process until it's big enough to tax, and then the governments start taking the profits for social programs and the industry starts suffering.

When Ireland first joined the EU their economy was not good and many in Ireland attribute their prosperity to the EU so I think there is probably a similar situation as in the UK with 2 camps one for and one against but probably for very different reasons.

Many in the UK were not over happy when Ireland came in as they saw their economy being a burden but there has been a major turn around which as I said above the pro Europeans has attributed to joining the EU so it just depends upon what spin you believe.

I have not heard much lately. The last thing I remember was Ireland not being too happy that the EU was insisting Ireland raise taxes because Ireland's economy was doing too well compared to the rest of the EU. It appears they want equal suffering along with equal rights and equal taxes.
