Democrats said they will try to filibuster John R. Bolton, the president's nominee to be ambassador to the United Nations, if the Bush administration does not turn over two final sets of documents.
"If the administration doesn't give us this information, then I want a 60-vote requirement here so that senators can express their views on this issue of the documentation that we need," said Sen. Christopher J. Dodd, Connecticut Democrat and a member of the Foreign Relations Committee who has been among Mr. Bolton's strongest critics.
Republicans say there are enough votes to confirm Mr. Bolton once those objections are overcome, but they first must win a cloture vote set for this evening to stop the filibuster.
Mr. Dodd said he actually supports an up-or-down vote on Mr. Bolton, but is being forced into a filibuster as a protest against the administration.
It is the latest in a series of stumbling blocks for Mr. Bolton, whose nomination has been held up several times as Democrats and the administration butt heads over releasing records from his time as undersecretary of state for arms control and international security.
Mr. Dodd said he knows how a filibuster might look to voters, given how a coalition of senators headed off a showdown earlier this week on filibusters of judicial nominees, but said Democrats must demand the administration's cooperation.

I can understand (I don't agree with the position but I can understand) the suggestion of a filibuster on a lifetime judge appointment. This is for the Ambassador to the freakin' UN. Come on! Chris Dodd needs to think again about what he wants to do here. Vote up or down and the majority wins.
Uh, Senator Kennedy?? BANG!!! ha ha, just kidding, Ted...
Thats the way I feel . This isnt a lifetime appointment at best he leaves when Presidnet Bush leaves. Bush should let them recess, send them a nice message to go crap in their hats and recess appointment Bolton.
Just honest curiosity, nothing more.
About the only thing I know about Bolton is that all the 'Rats hate him.
So I figure he is probably a stand up kinda guy.

Gee, I'm shocked.
So will the Mighty 14 ride to the rescue in a staged show of "bi-partisanship" or will they filibuster Bolton now too? Might as well, since filibustering Justices worked so damn well for them.
Heh heh...yeah ask da' waitress to come ovah heah and bring some mayo!!
The GOP can't complain about the DEMs not voting, if the DEMs agree to vote. You don't spank you kid when he behaves.
The GOP had no reason to use the nuclear option on the Owen nomination. The DEMs gave Owen an up or down vote.
I'll agree that the GOP caved on the nuclear option when the DEMs refuse to vote, and THEN the GOP doesn't act.
How dare you tell the elite how to do their jobs. Who do you think you are? You should be thankful that these mighty and selfless champions of democracy and republican government are wise enough to know that you really don't know what you want and that their party losing badly in elections is no reason to think that they most people in the country reject what they stand for. We just don't understand, you see, because we are not capable of understanding, that the minority gets to set the rules. Now be quiet and pay your taxes.
(Even though it's obvious, I'm being sarcastic here. I just wanted to be sure to point that out because someone on another thread a couple days ago didn't get it and got all offended)
You'd think he'd be old news by now. Didn't he just lose last night to the chick from Oklahoma?
Incredible likeness!
Lasted longer than I expected!
"Vote up or down and the majority wins."
That's not how the Left looks at things. In their view, theirs is the only "legitimate" perspective. We think they're silly or at most ignorant. They "know" that we are *evil* so anything they do to thwart us is fair.
This is why we have to stop pussyfooting around with them and crush them like the bugs they are.
Sorry, sometimes I get carried away.
(Stomp! Squish!)
I'm pretty sure it was a joke... they said filibuster Michael Bolton, the sappy singer.
But I think the support on the floor for Bolton is less than it was for Patricia Owen, for instance. That's why the test case was set up for Owen, not Bolton.
Congressman Billybob
The Rs are grinning from ear to ear on the Senate floor.Could they have the votes?
Who wants to bet that when they do, it will be heralded as another amazing feat of strategy by the GOP leadership? Everything's fine. Hey don't look here... look over there...
Well of course that goes without saying.
I'm not certain of that. Voinovich would obviously defect, but Chafee said he supports him. The vote might look quite similar.
I'm not aware of another GOP defector.
It was the wife's suggestion that I take tomorrow off, to make a 4 day weekend.
I did.
Now I know why she said that.
doh!
thanks,
LVM
